INSTRUCTIONAL DELIVERY BY RENEE DALEY

LEARNING OBJECTIVE Jake will tie his shoe laces by using the bunny ears method whenever he is asked to tie his shoelaces.

CRITERION Jake will tie his shoe laces firmly, ensuring the knot is tight. He will complete the task over three consecutive trials.

OVERVIEW ON THE LEARNING PROCESS Jake had seven learning sessions that were very successful. In the first three sessions Jake showed a great deal of interest and improved each session. This continued on to his next four sessions in which Jake dramatically improved on. Across the learning process, there were multiple prompts used to assist Jake in his learning. In the first session physical prompts were required as Jake did not have the knowledge at the time to complete the steps. This was the best option to avoid errors, which in return would cause frustration. The following sessions used direct verbal and indirect verbal prompts to assist Jake. As the sessions moved along, Jake retained more and more steps, which furthermore changed the prompt to a simple gesture. By the last two sessions Jake was consecutively completing the task to the criterion without any prompts. Jake was also given encouragement and praise, however as the sessions progressed, this was minimalized to ensure that Jake wasn’t feeding off the encouragement. Jake learnt the steps to the stimulus, and is now confidently capable of completing the task independently.

REFLECTION Over the course of this semester and the teaching process I have learnt many different approaches to learning. This bases around how you present your work (for example, whole presentation), analysing the learning process and progress, matching the prompts and teaching styles to the learner, how to plan for teaching (through the creation of a learning objective and a criterion, to the project proposal, to the baseline then moving forward to the stimulus chain response and then teaching the actual task). I learnt that basing it on the learner and their learning styles will give you the best result possible for the task. I found that it is essential for the teaching process to be analysed and planned before each day as it will help identify problems and solutions to increase a students learning opportunities.
