THE WAR IS OVER The South Lost It was up to the North to rebuild the South and reunite the Country. Their plan: Reconstruction

PEOPLE FROM THE NORTH TRY TO “HELP” THE SOUTH Northerners flocked to the South Southerners began to hate Northerners that took advantage of them in their time of need These northerners were called “Carpetbaggers”

NEW POLICIES IN THE SOUTH What do you think would happen if southern military leaders were allowed to run for office and make rules? Any southern man that was in the military was not allowed to hold public office Making Laws

CIVIL RIGHTS ACT OF 1866 Do you think that African Americans were treated fairly in the South? Passed to protect the rights African Americans gained in the South Federal troops were sent to the South to protect African Americans

WHAT NEW RIGHTS NEEDED PROTECTING? African Americans were finally allowed to run for public office. Who could not run? They gained equal rights with the white man (at least in writing) Who was sent to the South to protect these rights?

THE FREEDMEN’S BUREAU This group of people moved to the South to help former slaves What do you think Southerners called these people? What did they do???? They build new schools Taught reading and math to former slaves Helped them survive with food and jobs

RECONSTRUCTION IS OVER A. Ended in 1877 B. Election of 1876: New President wanted to stop punishing the South C. Federal Troops left the South
