Fat Required in our diets Found in meat, dairy, eggs, vegetables, fruits Used for energy storage, to cushion the body’s organs, insulate against heat loss, dissolve fat soluble vitamins

Triglycerides Fats are also known as triglycerides because they are made up of 3 molecules of fatty acids linked to a glycerol molecule

Two types of fat: 1.Saturated 2.Unsaturated

Saturated fat: Harder to digest Animal fats Solid at room temperature Increases cholesterol levels

Unsaturated fat: Easier to digest Vegetable fat Liquid at room temperature Can actually reduce cholesterol levels

Trans fats? Trans fat is the common name for a type of unsaturated fat that is man made Most trans fats are created industrially in partial hydrogenation of plant oils Ex. margarine

What is cholesterol? A waxy substance similar to fat found only in animal products Not all bad! Our cells need it to make cell membranes Our body produces it, so we really don’t need to eat any Too much clogs blood vessels which can lead to blockages and heart disease
