1 Industrial Water Efficiency & Zero Liquid Discharge
A Necessity NOW!!!!! Sanjeev Sharma India Water Week, 8th April, 2016, Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi

2 India faces tough challenges…...
Demand Supply gap of over 50% (Demand for Water to rise from 1500 BCM against a projected Supply of 740 BCM) Municipal and Domestic Water Demand to double and Demand from Industry will quadruple by 2030 Key Verticals in the Water Management Industry in India Water Supply and Infrastructure (EPC/PPP) Desalination (EPC/PPP) Waste Water Treatment Recycling/ZLD (EPC/PPP) O&M and Up-gradation Inequitable water distribution India constitutes 26% of World Population and only 4% of the Total Water Resources Diminishing water resources Water Resources is diminishing consistently Resources per capita would deplete from 1570 M3 in Year 2007 to 1340 M3 by Year 2025 Lower access to Piped Water Only 26% of Population has access to piped Drinking Water This situation has already forced govt to instruct industrial units to put their own Desalination/ Water Recycling units which will see all major industrial establishments going for captive water sources.

4 Major Inter State Water Disputes in India

5 India: Future of WATER Water crisis: Government imposes section 144 in Maharashtra's Latur

6 Need for ZLD Around 70% of the industrial waste is dumped into the water bodies where they pollute the usable water supply. Majority of the industries including Power Plants, Pharma, Tanneries Pulp & Paper, Textile, Chemicals, food etc generate wastewater with high salinity/TDS. Conventional ‘Physico-chemical-biological’ treatment does not remove salinity in the treated effluent. Discharge of saline wastewater further pollutes ground and surface water resources. Use of ZLD and/ Or water Recycling will reduce the intake of the fresh water supply, thus, lowering the cost, increasing the water efficiency and minimizing the environmental impact. Reduction in water demand from the Industry frees up water for Agriculture and Domestic demands

7 Zero Liquid Discharge Zero Liquid Discharge stands for zero discharge of wastewater from any Industry. A ZLD system comprises of a series and combination of various Advanced Waste Water Treatment technologies to primary and secondary treat, recover, & reuse the water from Water Cycle, thus reutilizing the same water again and again and minimizing further intake of fresh water into system A typical ZLD system comprises of the following components: Pre-treatment (Physical, Chemical followed by Biological) Reverse Osmosis (may consist of MMF/DMF/MF/UF followed by RO) Evaporator & Crystallizer (MED/MVC)
