1 Thornhill School News Issue 35 CLASS3CLASS3 CLASS ONE CLASS TWO SCHOOLSCHOOL As I write my final newsletter I find myself reflecting upon the changes in education since I began my career in 1975. In those days, staff meetings took place once a term, I address my boss as Mr Walker, there was no National Curriculum or OFSTED. Many changes have been for the better but I feel that the child is no longer the central component in the educational process. Targets and success criteria are now the way forward.. If we do not love and respect the children we teach how will they ever achieve their full potential? www.thornhill.cumbria.sch.uk Next Year: Back to School Wednesday 5 th September 8.50 am Have a safe and peaceful holiday. Fri - No Good Work Assemby This weeks talk topic was:Should the summer holidays be shorter to allow for more holidays during the rest of the year? Next Week: Why do people emigrate- why would you like to live in the future? Class 3 have completed their novel: Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. They have enjoyed the relationships, adventure and mystery in the story. Why don’t you ask them their favourite part? Since completing the novel, they have worked in groups to complete activities which use the text as a stimulus: creating travel agent brochures; newspaper reports; survival guides and glossaries. Please come and see their work. What a busy week we have had! We planned and wrote a class fantasy story which had talking trees, an octopus, a ghost and a wolf in it! The Year 1s then planned and wrote their own fantasy story and the Reception children wrote about an event which could happen in a fantasy story. Ask your child to tell you about their ideas.

It was thoroughly enjoyed by all the children. Holiday works Over the school holidays there will be several changes to the building to improve its general appearance and to create more interesting learning experiences for the children. The school would like to thank those parents/ friends who have helped to begin the re- decoration of the courtyard area. We appreciate your time and dedication. This will now be completed by a building firm who are hoping to create an outdoor learning space which can be used all year round. The square concrete slabs which cover the courtyard floor will not be needed. If you would like to buy some from us, please make Mrs Toman an offer before the end of term. You will need to arrange for collection yourself. During the fist few weeks of the holidays, the school hall and kitchen will also be painted. This will include walls and doors, which will be a bright and welcoming blue. New blinds, which have been funded by the Friends of school, will be put up, to replace the red curtains, or more modern look. Outstanding Dinner Monies Can I please remind you that all outstanding dinner money for this term must be paid on Monday 16 th July. I would also like to remind you that dinner money must be paid every Monday in advance of meals being taken. There is a lot of dinner money being paid during the week which is very disruptive and time consuming for Mrs Toman. Queens Jubilee Bench The Parish Council have kindly donated a bench to school to mark the occasion of the Queen’s Jubilee. Here you can see Mrs Figes and some pupils taking time out during their playtime.
