1 Julianna and Erika’s Trip to the Rainforest

2 What is a rain forest? A rain forest is a habitat with lots of trees and half of the animals live there. A rain forest also has layers such as forest floor, understory, canopy, and emergent. A rain forest is a place where it rains almost every day.

3 Location of Rain Forests
You can find rain forests in North America, South America, Asia, Africa, and Hawaii. All rain forests are located around the equator.

4 Emergent Layer The emergent layer is the highest layer in the rain forest. Many animals live on the emergent layer such as the Harpy eagle, sugar glider, sloths, butterflies, and other kinds of animals. The emergent layer is sunny because it is the highest layer and there are lots of monkeys and birds.

5 Harpy eagle The Harpy eagle lives in the emergent layer.
They come in different shapes, sizes, and colors. The harpy eagle is the largest raptor in the Americas. It hunts for sloths and monkeys.

6 Canopy Layer The canopy is a layer in the rain forest that has lots of plants and animals such as parrots, three toed sloth, and a boa constrictor.

7 Understory Layer The understory has many types of different animals such as jaguars, snakes, parrots, macaws, tree porcupines, quills, geckos, spiders, lizards, red eye tree frogs, grass hoppers, katydid, and crickets.

8 Forest Floor The forest floor has many different types of animals, insects, and plants like dragon flies, armadillo, snakes, rafflesia, orchids, army ants, beetles, ant eaters, tapir, and tarantulas.

9 Deforestation People are cutting down trees for profit.
They set fires for clearing areas for farming. People also cut down trees to make room for crops and grazing animals. They also cut down trees for paper, firewood, roads, ranches, and houses.

10 People of the Rain Forest
People of the rainforest take things from the rainforest, but they only take what they need. They paint their faces for celebrations. People of the rainforest use leaves for umbrellas.

11 Sloth The sloth lives in the canopy layer. It eats
leaves, insects, small birds, and reptiles. The sloths never come down from the trees. Sloths are also very slow. Green algae grows on the sloths fur because they have beetles on their fur.
