The Rainforest By: Keanna, Blake, and Michael

What is a rain forest? A rainforest is a place near the equator and is hot and humid. It rains almost everyday. The rainforest is full of trees, plants, and animals. Almost half of the world’s animals live in the rainforest.

Location of Rain Forests Rainforests are located around the equator and between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. The largest is in South America. The African jungle [rainforest] gets larger in the hotter years and shrinks in the colder years.

Emergent Layer The Emergent Layer is the top layer of the rainforest. The tallest trees of the rainforest emerge from the canopy creating the emergent layer. Harpy Eagles, pygmy gliders, parrots, monkeys, sloth, and butterflies all live in the rainforest.

Canopy Layer The canopy has the most animals in one layer. It is also the biggest layer in the rainforest. jaguars, monkeys, Frogs, boa constrictors, and tree porcupines are only some of the animals in the canopy layer. Bromeliads and lianas also grow in the canopy.

Monkeys There are lots of monkeys in the rainforest. Monkeys are mammals. They eat fruits and some bugs. Monkeys live in the canopy and sometimes the understory. They even live in the emergent layer.

Lemurs are medium-sized animals. They can live on the ground and in trees. They like to eat insects, fruit, leaves, and Garbanzo beans. Lemurs are friendly creatures. They are also intelligent. Lemurs

Understory Layer The understory gets less sunlight. Red-eyed tree frogs, chameleons, katydids, grasshoppers, and snakes are some of the many animals that live in this layer. Moss, shrubs, ferns, and epiphytes grow in the understory.

In the rainforest there are different kinds of frogs that live in the rainforest. Some of these frogs can be poisonous. You can tell by its color. Frogs are amphibious. Frogs live also in bromeliads. A frog may live its whole life in a bromeliad. Frogs of the Rainforest

Leopards Leopards are endangered. They are endangered because people hunt them for their fur. Leopards are also carnivores, which means that they eat meat. They are fierce predators of the rainforest.

Forest Floor The forest floor is the lowest layer and gets the least amount of sunshine. Heavy mammals, like tapirs live on the forest floor. Ocelots and jaguars also live in the forest floor. Low-growing shrubs grow in the forest floor along with fungi and roots from trees.

Snakes of the Rainforest Some snakes live in the rainforest. Snakes are reptiles, which means that they are cold-blooded. Some snakes are venomous. But others might just squeeze their prey. Snakes are carnivores. Some of the venomous snakes have a warning color to tell it is poisonous.

T a p i r s Tapirs are an endangered species. They are herbivores, herbivores are animals who eat plants. Tapirs can be brown, black, and grey. Tapirs are prey that can be hunted easily.

Deforestation Deforestation is when a rainforest or other forest is cut down for lumber, furniture, paper, and other things. They also cut down trees for mining. They mine for gold, but they mostly find silver. They also mine for fuel.

People of the Rain Forest There are some people who live in the rainforest. The people know how to use the plants of the rainforest as medicine. The Yanomamo live in the Amazon rainforest and so do the Tirios. l

Conclusion SAVE THE RAINFOREST!!!
