Agenda Notes – Air Pollution Literacy Groups – Clean Air Act Journal/Exit Ticket

Agenda Notes – Air Pollution Literacy Groups – Clean Air Act

Human Impacts and Air Pollution I can explain how human activities affect air quality.

Human Impacts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztWHqUF JRTs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztWHqUF JRTs

Human Impacts Acid rain pH Aerosols Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) Over farming Over burning Over use of industrial byproducts

Human Impacts acid rain - water droplets that are unusually acidic because of atmospheric pollution Acid – sour, bitter etc. – Measured on pH scale – 0 to 14 » lower pH being more acidic » high pH is alkaline or basic » seven is neutral » Normal rain water has a pH range of 5.3-6.0

Acid Rain can occur via natural causes like volcanoes but it is mainly caused by the release of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide during fossil fuel combustion When these gases are discharged into the atmosphere they react with the water, oxygen, and other gases already present there to form sulfuric acid, ammonium nitrate, and nitric acid. These acids then disperse over large areas because of wind patterns and fall back to the ground as acid rain or other forms of precipitation.

Acid Rain Impacts Aside from oceans and runoff water, acid rain can significantly impact forests. – As acid rain falls on trees, it can make them: lose their leaves damage their bark stunt their growth – By damaging these parts of the tree, it makes them vulnerable to disease, extreme weather, and insects Acid falling on a forest’s soil is also harmful because it: – disrupts soil nutrients – kills microorganisms in the soil

Human Impacts Aerosols – tiny particles (solid and liquid) suspended everywhere in our atmosphere Smoke and exhaust; dust and sea salts; mists and sprays – Reflect and absorb sun energy Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) – Released in aerosols – Lasts a long time in the atmosphere, rises and hurts the ozone **deplete ozone**

Human Impacts Over farming Changes the CO2 in the atmosphere because of the plants The increased use of fertilizers/pesticides get into the water and evaporate into the atmosphere to turn into acid rain Over burning Sends gases into the atmosphere Over use of industrial byproducts Sends gases into the atmosphere

Steps to HELP Air Pollution Clean Air Act Drive less Manage the electricity used

Practice

Which of these has been controlled in an attempt to reduce the depletion of ozone in Earth’s atmosphere? A.Methods od filtering gasoline B.Use of chloroflourocarbons (CFC’s) C.Methods od radioactive waste storage D.Sets of mercury (Hg) compounds

When stratospheric ozone levels are reduced, the amount of ultraviolet radiation hitting Earth increases. Ozone depletion is most often caused A.By the reversal of the magnetic field of Earth B.When flourocarbons are released into the atmosphere C.When electromagnetic waves from the Sun increase D.By abrupt changes in weather and climate patterns

Agenda Notes – Air Pollution Literacy Groups – Clean Air Act

In small groups of 3-4 students, read together the Clean Air Act During and after reading, each student must pick out a word, phrase, sentence, and idea (large concept) after time is up for reading, students will share out and have a discussion on their feelings Large group discussion

LEARN TOMORROW = BELOW 80 ON WEATHER AND CLIMATE QUIZ!!! 80% = 15/19 SAFE = Juan, Michael, Virgilio, Stroud, Jacob, Makayla, John, Lee, Ramiro, Deoveon, Adamary, David, Nelson

Agenda Notes – Air Pollution Literacy Groups – Clean Air Act

Journal/Exit Ticket In paragraph form, write a mini essay on human impacts on the Earth and its environments with a focus on the human impacts on the atmosphere or air. If humans impact the atmosphere and air, what does that mean? What does it cause? Be specific… explain
