Enterprise Architecture Highlight A ubiquitous NLH: NLH is not just a website - NLH knowledge is widely accessible via diverse portals and clinical applications What we are delivering: A true Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) A single comprehensive Interface which any client application can consume. This will be used by the Map of Medicine, by the NHS Microsoft Office Products and by GP systems of Choice suppliers Increased scalability and performance Single Knowledge sign-on across all knowledge products Opportunities for working with you -Improved Access to the Knowledge Base e.g. MoM Microsoft and GP systems of Choice. Working with the service to improve and promote these features is key to their successful implementation Programme Lead: Kailash Sohoni

Discovery to Delivery (D2D) Highlight: Knowledge is more findable, and there is an easier, seamless user journey from discovery to delivery of documents, NLH brings together disparate collections into a common information architecture What we are delivering: Search 2.0 – Single Search Replacement A re-design of the Information Architecture for NLH around a series of themed Hub Pages and searches; Integration of current clinical database, eBooks and Journals portals into a Books and Journals Hub; Development of new evidence based medicine search services within the Evidence Hub Establish an openURL compliant link resolver service as a stand-alone service for integration NLH search and NLH partner services; Complete a Document Delivery Business plan and establish a sustainable funding model for a future service Opportunities for working with you We need your help to test and improve www.library.nhs.uk as the knowledge hubwww.library.nhs.uk Programme Lead: Christine Rimmer

My Library Highlight NLH Users are able to personalise their knowledge resources and share those with other users : Local services can use personalisation to extend their reach through the web What we are delivering: –A channels architecture will allow discovery and tailoring of a personal current awareness through an aggregator – My Update – and enable NLH to deliver channels for consumption by other sites or, for example, push services as part of registration. Channels will allow users to share feeds and links and tagged resources with other NLH users –Current Awareness and alerts services will be developed with networks of librarians to link NHS clinicians and managers to services provided by their local librarians. –The Specialist Library Programme will contribute Current Awareness RSS feeds and create Channel templates for their speciality, targeted at specific audiences such as students or primary care staff. –Links to local (or favourite) library services – ask-a-librarian Opportunities for working with you We want to run two pilots to test personalised Knowledge resources to meet individual needs. London and Yorkshire and the Humber are the two proposed test sites Programme Lead: Steve Ashwell

Service Modernisation Highlight: To draft and trial an NSF for Libraries and Knowledge Services by Oct 1997 By trialling a National Service Framework that will ensure that there are understandable, measurable and realistic performance measures for knowledge services across all Trusts and Organisations in the NHS. The NLH Institute team is a pilot site so that we understand our own position in relation to the standards. The outcome will inform us where we need to develop and improve and to demonstrate that we can practice what we preach – so far the results are encouraging and seem to indicate the NSF is workable and the NHSIII is reaching an acceptable level of performance against measurements Opportunities for Working with you:  The NSF will be useful to NHS Trusts who are seeking to measure themselves against National Standards. Your testing feedback and commentary is crucial Programme Lead: Colin Davies

Specialist Libraries Highlight:To Undertake a Review of Specialist Libraries to Deliver an improvement in terms of infrastructure and technology, and in terms of their relevance to the communities they are designed to serve. 14 Reflection on our first few months We are very glad to be here! We have been made very welcome! We know we need to do more to raise awareness of NLH services within the wider Service and would like your help to do that, your role as our partners and Champions would be invaluable. We know some of our projects are relevant to other parts of the wider health service and we want to develop collaboration and co-development programmes so intelligence on possible opportunities in this direction would be great. We are developing many exciting and innovative products to help the development of knowledge based decision making in the service and we need to make sure as many people as possible can access and use them so any ideas you can feed back to us in this respect would be very helpful. Finally we would also value highly any commentary you could feed back to us on the use, or not, as the case may be, of the NLH in general.
