3 “I just chopped one tree. I am doing no harm. I am being quite useful” said the Once-ler in The Lorax. If only the harvesting of one tree didn’t lead to the harvest of another to create a disastrous domino effect. Industrialists of the 19th centuries, seeing the forest resources of North America, didn’t think twice of utilising it for profit…until loggers arrived at the Pacific Ocean and had to begin the re-planting process.

4 Sadly, The Lorax is shockingly close to its portrayal of a harvested forest. On the left is Dr. Seuss’ imagery of a completely destroyed forest Colorado after the land suffered greatly from erosion after deforestation. The American public did not get to see first hand the damages inflicted upon the environment to create the vast wealth the country was created upon.

5 Pope Francis & Church teaching on the environment: Pope Francis’s repent of the ways we have harmed our planet Pope Francis’s teaching on the care for our common home, he says we must “acknowledge our sins against creation” and “repent of the ways we have harmed our planet”.
