COMMUNITY EVENT: TECHNOLOGY AS A TEACHING AND LEARNING TOOL By: Maria McClain EDU 620 Professor: Neely January 11 th, 2016 Community Center Representative

STATION 1: TECHNOLOGY WILL HELP TEACHERS APPLY UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING (UDL) IN THE CLASSROOM UDL principle is about finding instructional materials that are good for all students not just for a small group of students. UDL provides all students with lessons that provide an equal chance of academic success instead of waiting for some students to fall behind. UDL has three main principles:  Representation  Teachers provide different ways to present a lesson (visual, auditory, etc.)  Expression  Teachers give their students different kinds of opportunities to show what they learned.  Engagement  Teachers minimize the distractions and motivate students to try their best. The lessons provide opportunities for students to reflect on their learning.

UDL AND TECHNOLOGY WILL HELP STUDENTS: Measure their success in school in more ways than a simple grade at the end of each quarter (Palmer, 2015). o Technology gives students better feedback: immediate, specific, positive, and corrective (Palmer, 2015). o Technology allows teachers to give Formative Assessments daily, and teachers can use the data to intervene and challenge the students as needed (Edyburn, 2013). Improve student’s performance and keep them in school. o UDL helps students connect with what is being taught (Noonoo, 2014). o UDL helps teachers give information and content in multiple ways and then students are able to interact with that information to make it their own (Noonoo, 2014).

UDL ACTIVITY Parents: look at the teaching scenarios at the bottom. What would you choose to do? If you have your child with you, talk to them about what they would choose and why. If you had to learn about Mars what would you choose to do? A) go to the NASA website https://www.nasa.gov and find information about mars: color, size, age, distance, materials, and history. https://www.nasa.gov  You can choose to present your finding using  Read Aloud  Video  Diorama  Poster  Essay  3-D Model If you had to learn to reduce fractions what would you choose to do?  Watch a video  Learn from another student  Watch a lesson from the teacher  Use pictures or manipulatives to reduce fractions  Practice doing many problems with the teacher  Use a computer program that will guide you through the steps of reducing fractions.  Take notes on the steps of reducing fractions and then apply it by yourself  Learn a song that will remind me of the steps to reduce fractions

STATION 2: DISTRICT’S MISSION Mission: Prepare our students with 21 st Century Skills to continue their education and succeed in the workforce of today’s global economy.
