1 Occupations of Graduates Groen Sebenza Programme

2 The Groen Sebenza (Jobs Fund) programme was launched in May 2013 by the Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms Edna Molewa. The job creation and skills development programme placed and ‘incubated’ 800 previously unemployed youth (pioneers) mainly from rural areas with 44 host organisations within the biodiversity sector nationally, where they received on-the job training as well as invaluable workplace experience. Of the 800 pioneers, 555 are graduates and 245 non-graduates. Pioneers have been participating in a national training programme which focussed on generic and life skills training opportunities which include: Computer literacy, Project Management, Career guidance, Communications and Networking and Leadership training. Pioneers have also received occupation specific skills training at a host institution level relevant to their appointed occupations for more than two years. 4 Nature Conservation (202 graduates) SKILLS: understanding biodiversity patterns, trends and indicators; knowledge of environmental policy and legislation; project management, planning; strong communication skills; Stewardship & Extension officer; Research assistant; Environmental consultant; Biodiversity Monitoring specialist; Atmospheric modeller; EIA coordinator

5 Environmental Management (44) SKILLS: knowledge of environmental policy and legislation, excellent technical environmental knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, good analytical skills, research and report writing skills Environmental Manager; Biodiversity Planner Integrated Catchment manager; Reserve Manager Waste management specialist; Environmental Technician, Environmental Impact Assessment Co-ordinator, Infrastructure Manager

6 Education; Communication & Marketing and Community Development SKILLS: Strong social and interpersonal skills, passion for people, environmental content knowledge, observation and facilitation skills, knowledge of sector and policies, excellent communication skills, creative and strategic thinking, planning skills Environmental Educator; Climate Change Educator & Scientist; Community development; Youth Development Project management Community building & liaison officer; Communications officer; Information officer

7 Law and Safety (25); Engineering (1) SKILLS: good listening skills, ability to interpret and analyse; pragmatic approach to complex legal problems; effective communication skills; commitment to healthy environment; technical ability and good mathematics and technical skills Regulation, Compliance & Safety officer; Biosafety Monitor; Blue Flag Trainer; Coast watch coordinator; Law admin officer; Electrical Engineer
