BRIEF HISTORY Began with individuals seeking advice during trying times from elders or religious figures (such as priests) The industrial revolution promoted mobility as well as a belief in science and a strong work ethic. It also gave rise to the concept of mental asylums With the help of Sigmund Freud psychotherapy became a prominent practice and trained individuals began to help those in distress work through their problems

BRIEF HISTORY Through empirical research psychotherapy was called into question and the concepts of behaviorism (attempts to change behavior) and humanism (focus on people as individuals with the ability to change their own futures) were born During the second half of the twentieth century counseling was developed as a distinct profession from therapy in two specific ways. Counseling is often focused on communities rather than individuals and it can address both large and small issues as opposed to just large issues.

This indicates that I am quite capable of completing the necessary coursework for this master’s program. I am presently the president of Active Minds at Clemson University (an organization dedicated to reducing the stigma around mental illness and encouraging individuals to seek mental health care)

Interpersonal skills I exhibit interpersonal skills because I have experience communicating with many different types of people as part of being president of an organization. These interpersonal skills relate back to my high score on the “social” section of the O*NET profile Listening skills I exhibit listening skills because I have practice in listening and understanding the ideas of others as well as interpreting them in order to run an organization. This relates back to my high score in the “investigative” section of the O*NET profile. Organizational skills I am very organized, often with different folders and colors, which relates back once again to my high score on the “artistic” section of the O*NET profile. Speaking skills I have developed speaking skills because I have practice explaining concepts in several ways often with analogies. This way of speaking to people is born from my artistic and social abilities, as shown from my O*NET scores.

RELEVANT ACADEMICS Determinants of Health Behavior Determinants of Health Behavior is a health class at Clemson University that delves into the various reasons people do or do not do certain behaviors and what to facilitate or limit certain behaviors. Child Abuse and Treatment Child Abuse and Treatment is a sociology class at Clemson University that closely examines child abuse, the factor that contribute to it, ways to prevent child abuse, and ways to deal with the aftermath of child abuse. Lifespan Developmental Psychology Lifespan Developmental psychology is a psychology class at Clemson University that covers how individuals develop and function across their lives as they age.
