2 Magna Carta- Great Charter 1215 AD- nobles force King John to respect rights Signed at Runnymede 63 demands Habeas corpus- couldn’t be kept in jail without a reason and trial by jury King must obey laws- can’t take property without paying for it, responsible for his actions Parliament created- legislative body, advise king, consent to new taxes Judges free of government control

4 Hundred Years’ War Between France and England 1328- king died with no son English king thought he should be next king but was given to French man so England invades France English did well at first Joan of Arc- rallied French troops English captured and killed her- martyr 1453 French drove English out Changed government England- Parliament power grew, king lost power France- king’s power grew

6 Black Death- Bubonic Plague 1347-1351- swept through Europe Came from C and E Asia Carried by rats to trading ports in Mediterranean Sea Fleas spread it to humans 1/3 of population of Europe died- 25 million people- put in mass graves Blisters turned black

8 Ring Around the Rosy 1 st sign of the plague Pockets full of Posies People carry flowers to overcome the smell of death and disease Ashes, Ashes Items and homes of plague victims burnt We all fall down # of people dead and dying

9 Effects Manor system collapsed because weren’t enough people to work the fields Peasants demand wages for labor Peasants left for cities
