The Elements of Art & Principles of Design 3-D Design 1

The elements of art  Line  Shape  Form  Value  Color  Space  Texture 2

LINE an element of art that can be two- dimensional (pen on paper), three- dimensional (rope or wire), or implied (an edge). 3

SHAPE: An element of design that is two-dimensional and encloses area. Organic – shapes or forms derived from living things. Geometric – This term refers to mechanical, man-made shapes such as squares and circles. 4

FORM : An element of design that is three- dimensional and encloses volume. Static – a shape or form showing now movement or action. Dynamic – constantly changing or moving; in a state of imbalance or tension 5

VALUE: An element of design that refers to the lights and darks of grays and colors. 6

SPACE: the area above, below, around, behind, and through shapes or forms. Positive space – The area containing the subject matter in an artwork; the objects depicted, as opposed to the background or space around those objects. Negative space - the area that surrounds, and sometimes passes through a work or art. 7

TEXTURE the element of art that most closely relates to “tactile.” 8

COLOR The amount of light reflected by a surface determines the color Hue – one of the main properties of color 9

Tint- a color with white added Shade- a color with black added 10

Primary: red, yellow, & blue Secondary: colors made by mixing two primary colors (green, violet, and orange)orange, green, violet Tertiary: colors made by mixing one primary and one secondary color (red-orange, red-violet, yellow- orange, yellow-green, blue-violet, blue-green) 11

Monochromatic: the color scheme in which one uses a hue plus its tints and shades. 12

Complementary: Colors that are opposites on the color wheel 13

The Principles of Design  Balance  Contrast  Movement  Pattern  Emphasis  Unity 14

Balance – A principle of design that relates to the visual arrangement of the different parts of the artwork. Symmetry: formal balance Asymmetry: informal balance 15

Contrast – the design principle that refers to differences in value, colors, and texture 16

Movement : Creating a path for the viewer’s eyes to follow across a composition. The main principle of design that a kinetic sculpture contains. 17

Pattern – the repeating of a motif, shape, line, color in a recognizable organization. 18

Emphasis – when one area of an artwork attracts more attention than the rest. 19

Unity – The sense of oneness or wholeness in a work of art. 20
