4 My crazy family!!

5 Meet the Teacher I have taught for 22 years…Kindergarten for 13 and I LOVE IT! I am a mom of three (Sarah, a senior at JMU, Mary Kate, a freshman at JMU, and Jack, a freshman at Colonial Forge) I love BASEBALL (my son is a south paw), anything outdoors and walking my doodle, Sam.

6 Daily Schedule/Newsletters See our Daily Schedule in your child’s binder Weekly newsletters will contain the following information : – Themes and units of study – Important dates to remember and miscellaneous information – Information from the school

7 Reading Balanced Literacy: Literacy blocks are broken into smaller blocks with a break out lesson followed by a 20-30 minute work time, in which the students rotate through a variety of literacy center stations. – During centers the teacher meets with small groups for a guided reading lesson. – My teaching assistant, Mrs. Hurst, meets with students individually or in small groups to work on different skills. Poetry Binder and Popcorn Word folder

8 Math This year in math we will learn: Math objectives are integrated during daily calendar, mini-lessons and math stations. For example: number recognition counting to 100 skip counting patterns The end of the year classroom goal is for students to recognize numbers to 30 and count to 100.

9 Literacy on the Computer Your child will be using the computer and ipads to reinforce language arts skills using research based educational programs such as Istation, and Starfall. Headphones

10 Assessments Assessments will be completed monthly. (Data folder, istation) We will be administering the PALS in October. DRAs (Developmental Reading Assessments) will be administered twice during the year. Our GOAL is a level 4! (show)

11 Take Home Reading Book-It Program Students need to read books every month and record the books on their reading log. Students who reach their goal every month will receive a coupon for Pizza Hut. Book Boxes: Paper books will be coming every couple of weeks and should be stored in your book treasure chest at home. Guided Reading: Students will bring home books on their level for them to practice. Your child will not receive a new book until the previous book is returned.

12 Homework Homework Expectations Homework will be emailed each month. If you would like to practice the skills we are working on at school this is a great way to do it. Homework is NOT required and is not taken for a grade!

13 Encore Students will visit six special classes each week. Our schedule is as follows: Day 1 – Art Day 2 – Guidance/Library Day 3 – PE2 Day 4– Music Day 5– STEM Day 6- PE1 * On P.E. days please make sure your child wears tennis shoes and dresses appropriately.

14 Field Trips We will take two field trips this year (one in the fall and one in the spring) 10-16 Cox Farm Please sign up to volunteer We will have a lottery for each field trip

15 Behavior Management Behavior chart – please initial your child’s agenda everyday. A behavior note will be sent home with a yellow or red. Please sign and return. Major offenses will be documented and sent to the administration for follow-up. Students who receive green or better all week will get to visit the treasure box on Friday!

16 Parent Involvement How Can You Help Your Child Be Successful? School attendance is imperative. Read with your child every night! Help your child with letter recognition, letter sounds and practice with the popcorn words. Help your child with number recognition and counting to 100. Visit educational websites. Partnership Ways To Become Involved At School – Volunteer to help at school, home, and/or field trips – Sign up for conferences (please try to sign up) Tuesday, November 5th – Support fundraisers – Read school marquee for upcoming events Make sure an adult that is listed on the emergency card is at bus stop to pick up your child, or if they pick them up from school.

17 Classroom Rules We have discussed “Quality Behavior” Please see our Classroom Rules in the back of the room and our Quality Teacher and Quality Student. Our goal is a safe and happy learning environment for everyone!
