Supported Study

Skills Make use of the map by quoting grid references, mention height, relief and aspect. Specify features as appropriate i.e. name roads, identify specific land uses. Use the key to help you identify land uses Make use of graphs and other illustrations – they are put there to help you Apply your geographical knowledge – you may be faced with a scenario that you know nothing about …….. You are being assessed on your ability to interpret information from the data and map that you have been given

Examples….. Location of housing estate Location of industrial estate Location of Nature Reserve The route of a pathway or road or cycle route Location of HEP scheme Location of forestry

What could you be asked? About the site – advantages and disadvantages/suitability Impact the site may have on the surrounding area How it might affect the local area – the environment, the people, the economy…. Are there more suitable sites/locations

Easterly aspect Fairly steep land rising to about Deciduous woodland in lower slopes with farmland in upper slopes A9 dual carriageway - cutting

Practice Look at the following grid references and discuss the following the aspect height above sea level relief land use accessibility

Demographic Transition Model Half class describe and explain the DTM for the UK historically and the other half describe and explain for the present day. Feedback to class in 10 mins

Discuss how this soil formed – mention climate, relief, bedrock, natural vegetation, biota and processes

Urban – Glasgow Transport You need to know The need for transport management The management strategies The effectiveness of the strategies

Need for Management Grid iron street pattern High volume of traffic Narrow roads Large number of pedestrians Several bridges Roads converge

Management Strategies and Effectiveness MS Fastlink will run services every 5 minutes Monday to Saturday between the CBD and new South Glasgow hospitals. On Sundays and evenings it will be every 10 minutes. EF This will cut down on the need for patients and the 10,000 workforce to use cars it only serves people who can get to CBD or live relatively close to hospitals. People living further away will get no benefit from the service. Car parking space has been reduced and this will impact on people who can only get to the hospital by car. Shift workers could have problems accessing the hospital outwith the times of the buses MS bus lanes are now more common e.g. along Govan Road, Great Western Road. EF This is making bus commutes quicker and encouraging more people to use buses. hefty fines have been imposed on car drivers using the bus lanes and some people feel that there has not been good enough signage to help drivers avoid bus lanes

MS BIAS (Bus Information and Signalliing System) will track buses using GPS so that passengers will know when the bus is due. It also will prioritise buses through traffic signals, particularly when running late EF this should encourage a greater volume of bus users
