PARTS FOR GROWTH Roots and water uptake

Do now In your book draw up the following table Leave the table open ended so you can add more each day Now grab your bean and fill in the tables Make sure you observe if it has rotated at all DateSketch of beanObservations

Question There were three functions of most roots What were they? 1. To hold the plant firmly in the ground 2. To take in water and nutrients from the soil 3. Some roots will store food that has been made in the leaves

What are roots? Roots form a branching system in the soil The stem of the plant is attached to the main root – the tap root Lateral roots grow of the tap root to the sides Some plants have a fibrous root system – this system has no tap root just a mass of roots growing from the same point Grasses are a good example of a fibrous root system

Fine Balance The size of the root system is in balance with the surface area of the leaves on the plant The roots have to be able to make absorb enough water and nutrient for the leaves, and the leaves make enough food for the roots to grow

Water uptake The main function of the roots is to absorb water and nutrients dissolved in it from the soil The lateral roots are covered in tiny root hairs which allow the water to enter the plant

Structure of Roots Roots are made up of Xylem Tissue Phloem Tissue Root Hairs Root Cap Collect a diagram, Stick it in your book under the heading “How roots absorb water” Use your green book to find the function of the xylem, phloem and the root hairs – copy into your book

Exercises to do now Copy the following – Roots that have special functions Roots may be adapted for Food storage – carrots, beetroot, potatoes Reproduction – roses – roots develop suckers that make new plants Climbing – Ivy have roots that attach to walls and allow it to climb Describe three features of a perfect carrot

How do roots absorb water Osmosis This is the process of water moving from an area where there is lots (high concentration) to an area where there is less (low concentration) For plants this is from the soil to the inside of the roots Entry is controlled by the root hair cells
