Forest Management Week of Feb 29

Bellringer: Feb 29 th & March 1 st  Name one consequence of deforestation

Forest Resources  Forests cover 30% of Earth’s land  Most of the world is either boreal or tropical  1/3 of the forests are used for timber  Roles:  Maintain soil  Maintain air  Maintain water quality  Biogeochemical cycles  Medicine  Food  Biodiversity Pg 105 - INB

Harvesting  Most commercial harvesting takes place in Canada, Russia and Brazil  In the US, most takes place in coniferous forests of the west or south

Methods  Clear Cutting:  50’s – 70’s approach  All of the trees from an area are cut at once  Most cost efficient but the greatest negative impact on ecosystems  Destroys entire ecosystem, causes soil erosion, increase sunlight on ground level  This change in light, precip, wind and temp leads to new microclimate, changing the original ecosystem

Seed Tree  Small numbers of mature and healthy seed producing trees are left standing so that they can re-seed the area  Shelter trees are left to to provide shelter to the seedlings as they grow

Selection System  Only some of the trees are cut down at once  Trees spaced widely apart are cut at one time and small random patches of trees are cut  Cons: moving trucks disturb the forest, more expensive, and more dangerous

Deforestation  The clearing of a forest and replacing of it for another use  Negative Effects:  Loss of biodiversity  Loss of soil productivity  Adds CO2 to the air, adding to climate change

Fire Policies  Forest service took Smokey’s message to heart  The suppressed all fires, even naturally occurring ones  Some plants depend on fire in order to seed  This also leads to catastrophic events eventually  2009 California fires

Sustainable Forestry Products  Wood and paper products made from environmentally sustainable methods  Initially, timber companies refused to convert their methods but now 70% of the harvest in British Columbia, Canada is certified sustainable  SUPPLY AND DEMAND

Organize Notebook  Pg 80 – Biomes Foldable  Pg 81, 83, 84 – Biomes Notes  Pg 86 – Nations Analysis  Pg 88, 90 – People Paradox Video  Pg 87, 89 – Human Population Notes  Pg 91 – Age Structure Diagram  Pg 92, 94 – Urbanization Bookwork  Pg 93 – Land Use Notes  Pg 95 – Urban Sprawl Notes  Pg 96 – Megacities Video  Pg. 97, 99 – Health Hazards Notes  Pg 98 – Hazards Bookwork  Optional – Pg 100-101 Study Guide

March 2 nd  No Class – SAT’s

Bellringer: March 3 rd  Read Pg 323 “Battling over Clayoquot’s Big Trees”  Summarize the events that have occurred at Clayoquot Sound over the last 25 years

Ecological Footprint Lab

Bellringer: March 4 th  Differentiate clear-cutting, seed tree and selection system.

Forestry Directed Reading  Download the assignment from Unit 9 in Schoology  Use Chapter 11 to answer all questions
