My Classroom Environment Flipped Learning Flipped Mastery Me Students are assigned many different assessments at the beginning of each unit. They have the freedom to work on them as they want, as long as they complete them by the unit deadline. Leads to individual students doing different things at the same time. “Engaged Students – Controlled Chaos”

My Classroom Environment Cell Biology Unit Assessments

My Classroom Environment Engaged Students – Controlled Chaos:  Viewed in a video created for District Administration to demonstrate a Flipped Learning classroom.  Filmed on “Come to School as Your Favorite Holiday”.  Apologies for the quality of the camera work, it was my first day with my new camera. https://youtu.be/NYl6DM5GYVQ

My Classroom Environment Since my students do not have to be on the same timeline for watching the videos, I needed the following for each individual student. A way to … be sure they were actually watching the videos. know when they were watching the videos and if they were making progress. measure their understanding of the content. differentiate and remediate any lack of understanding.

Video Assessment Technology “Watch – Summarize – Question” and “Put it on the Board”: Both are very effective methods of monitoring if students are watching the video.  Drawbacks – 1. Gives students a tight timeline 2. Students can not easily assess their learning 3. Teachers have a lack of data to determine the individual student’s understanding of the content Online technologies:  Requirements for the student 1. Free, 2. Easy to use, 3. Monitor their own progress, 4. Can stop and then restart at a later time, and 5. Gives instant feedback on their understanding of the content.

Video Assessment Technology Online technologies:  Requirements for the teacher 1. Free, 2. Easy to use, 3. Allows for the use of both teacher-created and public on-line videos, 4. Can see the student’s progress even as it happens, 5. Data are available and formatted in a easy to understand layout, 6. Assessment results can be downloaded into a LMS, and 7. Can assess individual student’s understanding of the content.

Video Assessment Technology Online Technologies Tested: 1. EdPuzzle 2. Ted Ed 3. EduCanon 4. NearPod All were excellent, but each had their pros and cons. After working with students, parents and administration, I settled on EdPuzzle.

EdPuzzle 1. Free to both teacher and students!!! 2. Easy to use: A. Setting up a class is easy for both the teacher and student. B. Any video can be used as long as it has a URL. C. Upload is quick. D. You can instantly crop the ends, add additional audio and create questions. E. After approving the video, it can be saved to any class that is established.

EdPuzzle Allows for the use of both teacher-created and public on-line videos:  I mainly use my own videos uploaded to Youtube, Paul Anderson’s videos (www.bozemanscience.com/biology) and some from Crash Course.www.bozemanscience.com/biology  All still can be cropped, have additional audio added and questions added.

EdPuzzle Can see the student’s progress, Data are available and formatted in a easy to understand layout, Assessment results are downloadable into a LMS, and Can assess individual student’s understanding of the content. EdPuzzle Demonstration
