Making Subject and Verbs Agree in Number 1.The subject of a verb is never found in a prepositional phrase. 2.Phrases beginning with the words with, together with, including, as well as, and in addition to are not part of the subject.

Making Subject and Verbs Agree in Number A prepositional phrase may appear between the subject and verb. The word YOU is always plural. The word EACH is always singular.

Compound Subjects and Subject/Verb Agreement

A compound subject is more than one subject. Ex: Jane and Joe are best friends. Compound subject joined by the word and REQUIRE a plural verb. (see above example)

Compound Subjects and Subject/Verb Agreement When the parts of a compound subject are joined by the words or or nor, the verb agrees with the subject nearer to the verb. Ex: Neither the boardwalk nor the beach is open. Ex: Neither Jane nor her sisters are home.
