Earth’s Spheres Atmosphere: located right above the Earth’s surface and includes layers of gases (clouds, air pollution, sand storms, hurricanes, etc.) It protects us by absorbing solar radiation. Biosphere: life on land, rivers and oceans (Biomes) deserts, forests, grasslands Hydrosphere: water in liquid and solid state (oceans, glaciers, snow, lakes, rivers, etc.) Lithosphere: solids of the Earth (rocks, soils, landforms, etc.) ©2012, TESCCC

Steps for diagram Use Page 38 in text book to find the diagram Title next page after week 1 Key terms as Earth and the Spheres. Draw a diagram and label the layers of the Earth. Next to each layer give a brief description of the layer. Finish by using color to add detail. Complete page by adding in the four spheres and giving a brief description of each sphere. ©2012, TESCCC

Plate Tectonics: View direction of the arrows showing movement of the plates. What can you deduce from this image? ©2012, TESCCC

Theory of Plate Tectonics ©2012, TESCCC

Present Day ©2012, TESCCC

Convergent Boundary A Convergent plate boundary is when two plates collide. A Convergent – Two types – Crust vs. Crust -Ocean vs. Crust ©2012, TESCCC

Divergent Boundary A Divergent boundary is one where the plates are moving away from each other.Divergent – Spreading is the result of a divergent boundary ©2012, TESCCC

Transform Boundary A Transform boundary is an area where two plates are sliding past each other.Transform – Often call a fault or transform fault ©2012, TESCCC

What causes the plates to move? Convection –The transfer of heat by the circulation or movement of the heated parts of a liquid or gas. Convection – Dictionary.com ©2012, TESCCC

Weathering and Erosion Weathering-Breaking down-(Physical or Chemical) Weathering Erosion-Carries away the material through wind, water or glacial Erosion ©2012, TESCCC
