3 Problems in Virginia By 1670, 25% of free white men in VA were former indentured servants Had little money to purchase land Could not vote; had few rights Lived in western VA in the frontier which was open to Native American attack

4 Problems in Virginia continued… Nathaniel Bacon a VA colonist considers all Native Americans enemies Raises his own army in 1676 to fight the natives in the Western frontier of VA Bacon asks Governor William Berkeley for militia support to fight the natives Governor Berkeley supported the wealthy; refused to finance war for poor frontier settlers

5 Problems in Virginia continued… Berkeley declared Bacon a rebel and charged him with treason for continuing to fight the Natives

6 Problems in Virginia continued… Bacon marches to Jamestown to confront leaders List of Grievances include- Lack of representation in House of Burgesses Disparity between treatment of classes Bacon’s march turned violent Set fire to Jamestown and Governor Berkeley fled Bacon dies suddenly and the rebellion dies

7 Outcome of Bacon’s Rebellion Realized that indentured servant labor isn’t working!!! They became free and wanted things; land, freedoms, rights, money American Colonies need a new source of labor and SLAVERY EXPANDS in the colonies

8 Skip Ahead about 80 years…. The French and Indian War

9 Salutary Neglect Before the French and Indian war, England practiced salutary neglect Salutary Neglect- British policy of avoiding or not paying attention to the colonies; the colonies governed themselves

10 The French and Indian War French & Indian War also called The Seven Years War (1756-1763) was the 1 st truly global war Fought in Europe, India, & North America

13 The French and Indian War continued… In North America the English colonies were expanding westward; they needed land Colonist moved into the Ohio River Valley; land grants were issued by England England and France continued to compete in the fur trade industry France occupied the Ohio River Valley for trapping fur

14 The French and Indian War continued… France had better relationships with the Native Americans; assisted with the fur trade England kept taking Native lands for their own use England and France set up forts in Ohio to protect their own interest George Washing at Fort Necessity for the English military

15 The Albany Plan Albany Plan of Union was a proposal to create a loose union or compact for the colonies during the French and Indian War Suggested by Benjamin Franklin (age 48)

16 The End of the French & Indian War The Peace of Paris or the Treaty of Paris (1763)- ended the French and Indian War between Great Britain and France France surrendered all land in North America to England

18 Results of the French and Indian War England increased its empire in the Americas (size doubled) England debt was greatly increased England wanted to re-establish control of the colonies (salutary neglect ended) The Colonies came together for a common cause

19 Proclamation of 1763 The Proclamation of 1763 was issued by King George III following the French and Indian War; it forbade all settlers from settling west of the Appalachian Mountains The Proclamation line was drawn separating native lands from the colonies
