Gasunie is one of the biggest gas infrastructure companies in Europe. Within the company, we give safety the highest priority; it forms the basis of our license to operate. We abide by the strictest safety, health and environmental standards, both for our own employees, external contractors and the surroundings. Gasunie’s safety policy is thus characterised by a proactive approach which is designed to prevent accidents, incidents and hazardous situations. Besmette filterkaars

General rules Familiarise yourself with the situation at the installation or construction site where you are going to work as soon as possible Make sure you know who and what is where Take the precautionary measures that are appropriate to the work you are going to carry out Set aside enough time for safety: consider what could go wrong and whether you have done everything you can to prevent hazardous situations Remain alert at all times when you are working. If in any doubt, always ask or suspend activities where necessary.

Mine dust and black powder Mine dust occurs in pipelines dating back from the time when coke oven gas was transported throughout the Netherlands. Mine dust contains toxic cyanides and thiocyanates, as well as rust, sand and clay. Black powder is a mixture of corrosion products resulting from the interaction of iron with sulphur and/or oxygen (iron sulphides and rust). Black powder is also sometimes referred to as black dust. The composition of mine dust and black powder can vary. Mine dust or black powder can be released in combination with each other and/or in conjunction with sand, salts, water, glycol, natural gas condensate, oil and related substances. Mine dust and black powder are extremely harmful to health and the environment. Maximum caution and alertness are therefore vital.

Mine DustBlack Powder A dry powder which can be caked onto the pipeline wall or appear as a greasy sludge. A dry powder or greasy sludge. Grey/black in colourBrown/black in colour Hydrocyanic (prussic) acid can be formed on heating or contact with water or acid Iron sulphides are pyrophoric, i.e. they can ignite or smoulder spontaneously upon contact with atmospheric oxygen Toxic Hazardous to the environment What are the properties of mine dust and black powder?

What personal protection measures are required? Use the correct personal protection measures as prescribed (statutory requirement) and keep them in good condition. You will then protect yourself, others and the environment. Once it has been established that mine dust and/or black powder are present, you should use the following basic package of PPMs: standard overalls liquid-proof disposable overalls chemical gloves safety boots (PU) helmet goggles full-face oxygen mask with ABEKHgP3 filter or independent breathing apparatus Please note: in the event of work involving specific risks, the site manager or supervisor will decide on any extra protection measures. These will then form part of the work permit.

Preventing pollution Use the rinsing tubs / decontamination unit Dispose of any clothing that is or could be contaminated in the designated waste bin Do the same with used (and finished) filter candles Clean your boots according to the prescribed procedure During work activities Wear the correct PPMs in the prescribed way Ensure adequate ventilation Respect safety zones (indicated by red and white warning tape) Suspected mine dust and/or black powder Leave the work site without delay Notify the permit-holder /site manager

with skin Eye contact Swallowing What to do Assume responsibility: in all cases, call a doctor without delay! Personal hygiene Always wash your hands with plenty of soap and water: before each break before eating and drinking before and after using the lavatory before smoking before leaving the location What to do if substances are released If mine dust and/or black powder are present, stop all work immediately and notify the permit-holder/site manager without delay.

What are the dangers of mine dust and black powder? Mine DustBlack Powder Inhaling dust or related vapour: Toxic, dizziness, headache, cramps, vomiting, diarrhoea. Red or blue skin colour. Red, painful eyes, poor vision Inhaling dust or related vapour: Highly toxic Contact with skin: Hydrocyanic acid fumes can be absorbed through the skin, resulting in similar symptoms to those following inhalation. 10 Prescribed measures Mine dust & black powder Take the casualty outside to breathe fresh air, allow him to rest, apply artificial respiration if necessary. Remove contaminated clothing, rinse skin with plenty of water or get the casualty to take a shower. Rinse with plenty of water or eyewash; remove any contact lenses. If the casualty is conscious: rinse his/her mouth out with water; DO NOT induce vomiting. Take responsibility: always call a doctor without delay!
