2 What does ”fewer opportunities” mean? Fewer resources compared to peer groups due to: -Lack of financial means -No or insufficient educational background -Living in deprived areas -Belonging to ethnic minorities -Physical or mental handicaps -Delinquency -Psychological problems -Difficult family circumstances

3 Why involve them in transnational mobility? -The democratic argument: inclusion -The pedagogical argument: transnational mobility as a pedagogical tool

4 Learning outcomes -Intercultural/international skills -Skills and competences in relation to field of volunteering -Personal development

5 ”Added value” in terms of learning ”Free space” ”Overcoming barriers” ”Helping yourself by helping others”

6 Support for participants: before departure Motivation Selection Preparation:- linguistic - cultural - practical - psychological - pedagogical

7 Support for participants: during the stay -Monitoring -Mentoring

8 Support for participants: after homecoming -Evaluation -Perspectivation -Recognition/documentation of skills and competences acquired -Guidance/Reintegration

9 Demands on organisers -Increased need for support and accompanying measures -Intensified coordination between sending and hosting organisations

10 What is needed? -Training seminars? -Platforms for sharing of knowledge and good examples of practice? -Supporting material? -Quality management schemes? -New forms of volunteering? -Research and development work?
