What is government? People need the help of one another to survive and prosper. In order to help one another more effectively we often live in communities. The organization that people set up to protect their community and to enforce its rules is called government.

What is the governments job? The purpose of the government is to protect the lives, liberties and property of members of the community and to provide the services that individuals cannot provide on their own. To exercise its authority, governments are given power- the authority to use force.

Research With your table groups use your electronic devices, books, and dictionaries to create your notes pages. Explain what limited government means, how it works and provide examples of limited governments. Explain what unlimited government means, how it works and provide examples of limited governments.

Limited Government Limited governments are governments that have limits to their power. Limited governments such as democracies, constitutional monarchies, and republics use constitutions or some other authority to limit the power of the government. In limited governments people have rights and responsibilities to participate in the government by electing leaders, voting and having personal rights.

Unlimited Government Unlimited governments are governments that have no limits to their power. Unlimited governments such as monarchies, totalitarian leaders, communist governments, theocracies, and oligarchies give leaders unlimited power over the citizens of a nation. In unlimited governments people are not guaranteed rights in the government or at times even in their own lives. People are controlled by the leaders choices.
