This will create unearned profits for the land owners, which should be taxed for the good of the community.  2. Theodore Dreiser: writes in his book, “Sister Carrie”, about the life of the working poor and working class in Chicago and New York City.  3. Edward Bellamy & Kate Chopin: wrote of a more Utopian Society in America, and addressed the needs of female equality in society.

3 The New Morality  1. Anthony Comstock  Fights “immorality” in society, and petitions for federal and state legislation to pass decency laws.  Called “Comstock” Laws  Outlaws “Deviant Behavior”: A. Pornography B. Drugs C. Abortion

4 Changing Call for Civil Rights  Booker T. Washington  1. Former slave who educated himself and fought social acceptance, not “equality”.  2. His Autobiography was called, “Up From Slavery.”  3. Asked whites for help to educate African Americans.  4. Founder of the Tuskegee Institute in 1881 in Tennessee.

5 Challenging the “Norm”  Dr. W. E.B. DuBois 1. First African American to graduate from Harvard with a Ph.D. 2. Demanded immediate equality for African Americans with Whites. 3. Founder of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People)

6 Women leading the Fight THE NAWSA Carrie Chapman Catt  1. In 1890 the National American Woman Suffrage Association was formed for militant suffragists dedicated to get the “Right to Vote”  2. The NAWSA limited membership to whites, while women like Ida B. Wells created the National Association of Colored Women in 1896.

7 Prohibition  1. Leading the fight against alcoholism and public drunkenness, the “Women’s Christian Temperance Union” (WCTU) was founded in 1874.  2. The Anti-Saloon League was formed in 1893, by Carrie Nation, to literally destroy bars and liquor bottles.
