Global Warming The sun heats our planet in a naturally occurring process. But, is Earth getting warmer than in the past? Are humans contributing to global warming?

Global Warming Global warming is sometimes called ‘Climate Change’. This is because our planet MAY be getting warmer. The higher temperatures can cause changes in precipitation, wind, and the severity of storms.

What’s the difference between “global warming” and “climate change”?

Difference GLOBAL WARMING is the increase of the Earth’s average surface temperature due to a build-up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. CLIMATE CHANGE is a broader term that refers to long-term changes in climate, including average temperature and precipitation.

The Greenhouse Effect The sun’s radiant energy warms the Earth, just like the Sun warms a greenhouse.

The Greenhouse Effect The Earth’s ATMOSPHERE acts like the glass of the greenhouse, letting the heat in, keeping it at the surface of the Earth and not letting it radiate back into space.

Atmosphere (not to scale) GREENHOUSE EFFECT 2. It can be reflected back into space 1. It can get absorbed REJECTED 3. It can be trapped by the atmosphere

Greenhouse Gases Many kinds of gases make up our atmosphere. Some GREENHOUSE GASES are: water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, and nitrous oxide.

Greenhouse Gases They retain the heat that would normally radiate back out to space at night. Greenhouse gases are those gases which will act like the glass on the greenhouse.

Greenhouse Gases Certain human activities can add to the amount of these gases. For instance: burning fossil fuels, burning wood, decomposing organic wastes, agricultural and industrial activities. Brainpop-Green house effect

Global Warming : The Debate Based on climatologists’ estimates, it is believed that Earth’s average temperature has increased 0.9 degrees Celsius, or 1.62 degrees Farenheit between 1860 and 2000.

Planet Earth – Warming Trend Earth has warmed 1.62º F during the 20 th century. The total temperature rise that is anticipated in the 21 st century is 1.98º F to 11.52º F if current trends continue. 11 out of the past 12 years have been ranked as the warmest in modern history.

Global Warming Studies show that an increase of Earth’s temperatures follows an increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide levels have been increasing rapidly since the 1950’s. The increase is mainly due to the burning of fossil fuels and to deforestation.

Global Warming and The Greenhouse Effect If we increase the amount of gases in our atmosphere, there will be more matter to absorb and retain the heat. It is believed this is exactly what we are doing – creating more greenhouse gases and releasing them into the atmosphere through our everyday activities.

Global Warming and The Greenhouse Effect So, what’s the connection between Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect? 1. Humans are adding to the levels of greenhouse gases. 2. Greenhouse gases can absorb and retain the Sun’s heat. More heat in the atmosphere means higher global temperatures. 4. Higher global temperatures means Global Warming.

What are the likely effects of Global Warming? Sea levels may rise anywhere from 7 – 23 inches over the next hundred years or so. This will be due to the melting of mountain glaciers and ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica.

Planet Earth – Sea Level Change impact

What are the likely effects of Global Warming? Arctic sea ice will continue to melt. Less sea ice may mean higher sea temperatures because water absorbs more of the sun’s energy than the ice would.

What are the effects of Global Warming? The oceans will warm. Warmer ocean temperatures cause changes in climate, such as stronger hurricanes. Warmer oceans may cause coral reefs to die.

What are the effects of Global Warming? More flooding. Warmer temperatures mean more evaporation which leads to more precipitation.

So how does this affect me? Some scientist blame global warming and climate change for Hurricane Sandy Article #1 Article #2

Can we do anything about Global Warming and Climate Change? Yes!!

Cleaner Energy Solutions Wind Farms that harness the power of moving air can produce more and more of the world’s power supply. Geothermal power that taps heat generated at Earth’s fiery core can be a source of energy. Solar Energy draws energy from the warming sunlight that threatens our planet. Nuclear Power can be used to provide energy. Hydrogen Power can be used to fuel vehicles.

What can we do about Global Warming and Climate Change? You can put less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere! Use mass transportation Drive less Increase the use of renewable resources Reduce, reuse, recycle Plant more trees Use less energy in your home Brainpop Global Warming

GLOBAL WARMING – The Debate The official position of the World Natural Health Organization in regards to global warming is that there is NO GLOBAL WARMING! G lobal warming is being used to generate fear and panic. Those behind this movement are using it to control people's lives and for financial gain.

GLOBAL WARMING – The Debate Green energy is expensive and not feasible and cheap on a mass scale for years to come. Our huge economy and transportation need more than just wind mills and solar panels. Our economy needs natural gas, oil, clean coal, nuclear energy, and hydroelectric energy.

It is estimated that we have spent around $125.7 billion of taxpayer money from 2003- 2011 to try to understand and “fix” global warming. estimated
