This means that once they are mined and used they will be gone forever. Other types of energy are renewable sources because they will always be available on Earth. Coal, oil and gas are fossil fuels. They have been made from plants and animals that lived on Earth about 100 million years ago. South Africa has very large areas of coal underground in KwaZulu/Natal and an oil rig in Mossel Bay. Fossil fuels can be burned in power stations to produce electricity or used in cars and planes for transport. When they are burnt smoke and gases, such as carbon dioxide, are released as pollution. South Africa also has large reserves of uranium which are used in the Koeburg nuclear power station. This power station produces electricity without smoke pollution. But the radioactive waste must be disposed of safely. If there was an accident dangerous radiation might escape into the environment. Sun, wind and water can be used as sources of energy. Solar panels can be fitted to houses but this source of renewable energy is only available on sunny days. Wind energy can be collected through a windmill or wind-turbine which can be big and noisy. Hydroelectric power stations harness the energy in water stored in high dams. It is only possible in areas where there are mountains and rivers.
