13 Instrumental Music Service Largest in Scotland Free provision: instrumental lessons in school; use of instruments; access to school and local authority bands, orchestras and ensembles 80 instructors (55.14 FTE) of whom 35 are full time and 45 are part time Teach in every mainstream school in the city and in special schools by request A range of instruments is offered Teaching is in small groups and individually where necessary Selection based on a number of criteria

14 Instrumental Music Service 75/25% secondary/primary school split to support SQA Instructors allocated according to school roll Non-classroom instruments offered across all primary schools (upper strings, lower strings, brass and wind) All instruments offered in secondary – above plus keyboard, percussion, voice and guitar Allocation designed to support cluster collaboration Working in localities is designed to strengthen local collaborations and partnerships

15 Instrumental Music Service Offered from P4/5 through to S6 In 2014/15 a total of 5,215 pupils learned music through the Instrumental Music Service (above target) There were a further 4,305 pupils engaged in YMI projects with an additional 430 participating in a (YMI) partnership with Scottish Chamber Orchestra. There are currently 1,688 active members of the Young Musician’s Passport (Edinburgh International Festival) the majority of whom are counted above in the about IMS figures

17 Youth Music Initiative Magic of Music Early Years resources and CLPL for all nursery schools and partner providers and Early Years Centres ABC Music online resources and CLPL for primary practitioners to teach music at early and lower primary NYCoS – musicality for all P3 classes Sounds Like Music – blocks of teaching for P4 and P5 classes from Sept 2015 Sounds Like Friday – Friday afternoon lessons in centres across the city – offered to every P5 – 7 pupil Sounds Like Saturday – as above on Saturday mornings at Broughton High School

18 Youth Music Initiative Targeted projects such as: Creative Traditions of Music in schools with high numbers of children who do not have English as a first language Music Making a Difference – targeted music and song making project in Panmure St. Ann’s Citywide Piping and Drumming Performance band The Inclusive Classroom delivered by Drake Music in Special Schools

19 Youth Music Initiative 4,305 pupils engaged in YMI projects in 2014/15 an additional 430 participated in a (YMI) partnership with Scottish Chamber Orchestra In 2015/16 with the introduction of blocks of teaching now offered to every school for P4,5 and 6, numbers are likely to more than double All YMI pupils have opportunities to perform to parents and carers in schools, centres and concert venues

20 Youth Music Initiative In June 2015, 571 pupils performed in a concert at the Assembly Hall on the Mound Also in June, 215 pupils from joint campus schools performed at the Ross Bandstand 60 pupils from Special Schools performed alongside members of the Edinburgh Schools Jazz Ensemble at the Queen’s Hall in March

21 Screen Education Edinburgh Media and Screen education Focus on skills development and technical skills in media and film making Wider achievement accredited awards SQA awards Professional Learning for staff

22 Screen Education Edinburgh Focus on working with young people facing greatest disadvantage Many go onto study film at college and university Many return to work as interns and eventually as freelance film-makers with Screen Education Edinburgh

24 From Studio to Stage Part of Resonate Concert Series in Queen’s Hall Includes children and young people from all sectors and in all perfuming arts Gives them an opportunity to perform on a professional stage Great opportunity for parents and carers to enjoy really diverse performances Younger children enjoy sharing the stage with senior pupils Inspiring and aspirational

27 ‘It was a HUGE achievement for some of our pupils to appear on stage, in fact some of them were too nervous to even eat their chocolate muffins till after the performance!’ ‘Thanks for organising this event, it really does give the students confidence and an unforgettable experience.’ Parent feedback

28 Participation in artforms other than IMS and YMI in 2014/15 totalled 3,721 pupils and 139 staff. This figure does not count participation in activity that was not delivered in partnership with the Arts and Creative Learning team.
