2 War in Europe: D-day and Battle of Normandy SIN # 44 SWBAT: Examine D-day and the Battle of Normandy as a major event in WWII.

3 D-day refers to the date to launch the attack, NOT the entire battle

4 Battle of Normandy June 6, 1944: 156,000 American, Canadian, and British soldiers landed along the 50 mile beach at Normandy (France) led by General Dwight Eisenhower (USA). Known as D-day Battle lasted from June-August and was the largest water based military assault in history Resulted in Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi control Seen as the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany

5 Casualties: -4,414 Allied soldiers on D-day alone -Between 4,000 – 9,000 German soldiers on D-day alone Today, 27 war cemeteries hold the remains of over 110,000 dead from both sides: 77,866 German, 9386 American, 17,769 British, 5002 Canadian. Between 15,000 and 20,000 French civilians were killed, mainly as a result of Allied bombing. Thousands more fled their homes to escape the fighting.
