2 D-Day June 6, 1944 June 6, 1944, 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. General Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end on June 6, the Allies gained a foot- hold in Normandy. The D-Day cost was high -more than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded -- but more than 100,000 Soldiers began the march across Europe to defeat Hitler. Press Here to watch videoHere

3 Troops march across Europe After the success of D-Day Allied troops made the march across Europe to drive Germany back within German borders. On August 25th, 1944 Paris was liberated and by Autumn the Germans had been driven back into Germany

5 Victory in Europe Now Hitler was being crushed from two sides. He had a momentary flash of hope on April 12 upon learning that President Roosevelt had died. But as the Soviets approached his bunker, April 30th, he realized the end had come and shot himself. When he died so did National Socialism and the "Thousand-Year Reich." VE-DAY (Victory in Europe) May 8, 1945, this date is when the Allies accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany. See Part II for rest of Lecture
