DO NOW! 2/16/11 1. Write down one question you have about the reproductive system (male, female, or about babies). This question must be appropriate enough to be read to the class.

DO NOW!- 2/17/11  1. Why might it be bad if all people were exactly the same?  2. What is the male sex cell called?  3. What is the female sex cell called?

DO NOW! 2/18/11  1. What is the tube that BOTH men and women have that carries urine?  2. What is the ‘soup’ of fluid that carries sperm called?  3. Where does a fertilized egg grow inside of a woman?  4. Why do fallopian tubes have fingers?  5. Why are testes on the outside of a man’s body?

DO NOW 2/21/11  1. What is the female sex hormone?  2. What is the male sex hormone?  3. Name 1 thing about the male and female reproductive systems that is similar.  4. Name 1 thing about the male and female reproductive systems that is different.  HW: p. B124 # 1, B127 #12,13 B128#26

DO NOW 2/22/11  1. Write down one question you have about pregnancy.  2. Why would men be able to make so many more sperm than women make eggs?  3. When do men start producing sperm?  4. When do women start producing eggs?

DO NOW! 2/24/11  1. Where is the egg fertilized?  2. Where does the egg implant?  3. You are a doctor. You have two patients- Martha and Alicia. Martha is 14 weeks pregnant. Alicia is only 6 weeks pregnant. Tell your patients whether they are carrying either an embryo or a fetus.  Martha:  Alicia:

DO NOW! 2/25/11  1. What are the 3 steps of birth in the correct order?  2. Where are sperm produced?  3. What acts as the major source of nutrients and oxygen for the growing fetus? (hint: umbilical cord is attached to this)  *turning in DO NOW sheets today!  *QUIZ on Monday on the Reproductive System

DO NOW 2/28/11  1. What is the plug between the uterus and the vagina called?  2. How does food get from the mother to the growing fetus?  3. At what age do girls sexually mature?  If you finish early, start studying your notes.

During the Quiz…  Write on your own sheet of paper.  Try your best.  Read when you are done.  Talking=refocus

The Reproductive System Everything you want to know about how humans grow, develop and reproduce!

What’s the function of the reproductive system?  To make sure the species survives… by passing on your genes… by passing on your genes… when you make babies (more humans)! when you make babies (more humans)!make babies (more humans)!make babies (more humans)!  How does the reproductive system do it? It produces hormones that control how you develop (puberty)It produces hormones that control how you develop (puberty) It produces sex cells (egg and sperm cells)It produces sex cells (egg and sperm cells) It transports and sustain these cellsIt transports and sustain these cells The female reproductive system nurtures the developing offspringThe female reproductive system nurtures the developing offspring

What is sexual reproduction?  Sexual reproduction just means: the female produces an egg the female produces an egg the male produces sperm the male produces sperm the two sex cells join together during fertilization to produce an offspring. the two sex cells join together during fertilization to produce an offspring.  Most organisms on earth sexually reproduce –plants, insects, animals, humans, etc...  Sexual reproduction makes sure you have a variety of genes – half from EACH parent! Having variety is GOOD for the SPECIES!

The Male Reproductive System  Testes produce: Sperm (sex cells) Sperm (sex cells) Testosterone Testosterone (hormone that controls sexual maturation in men) (hormone that controls sexual maturation in men)  Scrotum: external pouch of skin that holds the testes (and keeps external pouch of skin that holds the testes (and keeps them 2-3°C cooler)

The Male Reproductive System  Sperm mix with fluids from the glands to form semen, which leaves the body through a tube called the urethra in the penis.  Urine also leaves through the urethra, but not at the same time!

The Male Reproductive System The Male Reproductive System Figure 28–3

The Female Reproductive System  Ovaries produce: Eggs (sex cell) Eggs (sex cell) Estrogen (hormone that controls sexual maturation in women) Estrogen (hormone that controls sexual maturation in women)  Fallopian tubes: carry the eggs to the uterus where a fertilized egg would attach to the wall and develop into an embryo/fetus.

The Female Reproductive System  Unfertilized eggs break down and leave the uterus through the cervix, then exit through the vagina.  The vagina is also called the birth canal (how the baby leaves the mother’s body).

The Female External Genitalia The Female External Genitalia

What is puberty?  What is puberty? A period of time when your body changes to become sexually mature (able to reproduce). A period of time when your body changes to become sexually mature (able to reproduce).  When does it happen? Usually begins ages 8-13 for girls; ages 10- 15 for boys, and can last 5-6 years. Usually begins ages 8-13 for girls; ages 10- 15 for boys, and can last 5-6 years.  What causes puberty? Hormones (chemicals that control your body’s development) produced by your brain and your ovaries/testes cause your body to change. Hormones (chemicals that control your body’s development) produced by your brain and your ovaries/testes cause your body to change. Males: Testosterone Females: Estrogen Males: Testosterone Females: Estrogen

What happens at puberty?  Physical Changes Body Size and ShapeBody Size and Shape Males get taller, broader shoulders Males get taller, broader shoulders Females develop breasts, wider hips, Females develop breasts, wider hips, Body HairBody Hair Underarms, pubic area, facial hair (males) Underarms, pubic area, facial hair (males) Other changesOther changes Voice deepens for males Voice deepens for males Menstrual cycle begins for females Menstrual cycle begins for females  Emotional Changes Feeling moody Feeling moody Sexual feelings Sexual feelings

YOUR TASK   Draw three before/after pictures of examples of puberty.  (see board at side of classroom)

The Menstrual Cycle  “Monthly” cycle of changes in the female reproductive system.  How the body prepares for pregnancy.

Now that we know the basics…  How does fertilization happen? The path of the egg The path of the egg The path of the egg The path of the egg The path of the sperm The path of the sperm The path of the sperm The path of the sperm

The Human Life Cycle What happens after the egg is fertilized?  The egg is fertilized in the fallopian tubes.  This cell travels for 5 days and divides many times before it enters the uterus.  In the uterus, it attaches to the lining (wall) and begins to develop.  The first 2 weeks. The first 2 weeks The first 2 weeks

What happens during pregnancy?  Pregnancy lasts 38 weeks after conception (40 weeks after last period).  For the first 8 weeks, the developing human is called an embryo.  After the 9 th week until birth, the embryo is called a fetus. 5 weeks 14 weeks 24 weeks

What happens during pregnancy?  In 9 months, the fetus grows from a single cell to a fully formed human baby weighing 7-8 pounds!  Amazing transformations happen as the fetus grows - bones and muscles form, the heart begins to beat, eyes and ears start working…. Amazing transformations happen as the fetus grows Amazing transformations happen as the fetus grows 5 weeks 14 weeks 24 weeks

The Human Life Cycle Protecting and Nourishing the Fetus  Inside the uterus, 2 membranes protect and nourish the baby.  Amniotic Sac – filled with fluid, it cushions the baby.  Placenta – links the mother and fetus. Oxygen and nutrients pass from the mother to baby here.  The umbilical cord links the baby to the placenta.

What happens during birth?  The birth of a baby has 3 stages: Labor – strong, muscular contractions of the uterus. The cervix enlarges to fit the baby’s head. (lasts 2-20 hours!) Labor – strong, muscular contractions of the uterus. The cervix enlarges to fit the baby’s head. (lasts 2-20 hours!) Delivery – the baby is pushed out of the uterus through the vagina and out of the mother’s body. Delivery – the baby is pushed out of the uterus through the vagina and out of the mother’s body. Afterbirth – contractions of the uterus push the placenta out of the uterus. Afterbirth – contractions of the uterus push the placenta out of the uterus.

Preventing Pregnancy  The only 100% effective way to prevent pregnancy (and protect from sexually transmitted diseases) is to abstain from sex! Popular Birth Control Methods  Birth control shot (Depo-Provera) Failure rate: 3%  Birth control pills Failure rate: 9%  Diaphragm Failure rate: 13%  Condoms Failure rate: 15% *( among teenage users it is higher because of inconsistent use)  Rhythm method Failure rate: 25%  Withdrawal Failure rate: 27%  Douching Failure rate: 40 % (not true birth control) *Only condoms will also help protect from sexually transmitted diseases.

Drama Drama Baby Mama!  Rules: Write whether the mom is currently carrying an EMBRYO or FETUS.  Review:  Embryo = ___________ old  Fetus= ___________old

Leah just found out she was pregnant! She goes to see her doctor and he tells her she is 2 ½ weeks along in her pregnancy.

Alicia goes to the doctor and he tells her she is in her 3 rd trimester (meaning her 3 rd set of 3 months).

Corinne’s water just broke! Now she is going to the hospital!
