All rights reserved. 4 of 11 Work plan Health and Safety The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 is the major document in this area. It is a statutory (legal) document. The responsibility for health and safety belongs to both the employer and employee. There are many other documents which cover lifting and handling, control of substances hazardous to health, noise regulations, working at height etc. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 is the legal document which covers electrical installations. The IET wiring regulations (BS 7671) document is non-statutory.

All rights reserved. 5 of 11 Work plan Personal protective equipment (PPE) There are many types of PPE available. If required, PPE should be supplied by the employer and worn by the operative. The main types of PPE are: Foot protection (safety boots and shoes) Leg and body protection (overalls)

All rights reserved. 8 of 11 Work plan Details of work to be carried out By defining the work to be done and the order in which it has to be done, unforseen problems can be addressed before they cause a problem. A work plan also allows someone else to take over the work should the original operative fall ill, go on holiday etc. You will be expected to create a work plan for at least one of the practical exercises you are to carry out.
