Tapescript (Unit19 Warm-up ) Man 1: I come from “Down Under” and my country’s a very different kind of place from what a lot of people think. I mean, British people immediately think of the outback and kangaroos. I come from up North and it’s semi-tropical – we’ve even got tropical rainforests. Australia

Woman 1: I live in the third largest country in the world with a population of about 1.26 billion. I’m very lucky to live in the capital city – the political, economic and cultural centre of the country. Foreign visitors who stay here can visit some amazing places including The Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and of course, the Great Wall. Chinese

Man 2: I’ve been over to Britain a few times and nobody has trouble understanding me. But what’s amazing is the number of different accent in such a small country as Britain. My country, as you know, is really big, but there are only really three are only really three of four different accents. North American

Woman 2: I come from a country famous for manufacturing Mercedes Benz cars. In 1990, two different states – the East and the West – reunified to become one country. The people were very happy. Berlin is now our capital city. I’m proud to live in Europe’s largest economy and most populous nation. German

Man 3: My country is made up of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. I live in the east part of London. I’ve lived here all my life so I speak with a Cockney accent. Cockney English is unique. It’s got a lot of rhymes. Did you know we say, “apples and pears” instead of the word “stairs”? And can you guess what “April showers” stand for? Yeah, you’re right. “April showers” are “flowers”! British

Woman 3: I live in a country which produces a sparkling wine called Champagne. For most people, eating well is very important. We spend an amazing amount of time thinking about, talking about, cooking and consuming good food and wine. We’re famous for inventing the baguette, a long stick of bread. French Back
