Questions: On a college day, what time do you go to sleep and what time do you wake up? How much sleep do you have on a college night? How do you feel when you wake up when you have not had enough sleep? Would you be safe to drive when you wake up in this state? If you decide that you need more sleep, and you go to bed really early, is it possible to get to sleep? Do you watch TV, or use a mobile or computer just before trying to go to sleep? Why may this be a bad idea?

Questions When you go camping, what influences when you wake up? At the weekend, if you do not have a reason to get up early, what time would you sleep in to? Have you ever tried to stay up all night? Did you manage it? How did you feel? What would happen to you if you suddenly lost the ability to sleep? What do you know about sleep disorders?

Can you think of a bodily rhythm that runs on 24 hour cycle? Can you think of one that is longer than 24 hours? Can you think of one that is shorter than 24 hours? How do you think these rhythms are controlled?

Circadian rhythms These are rhythms that last 24 hours, such as the sleep wake cycle. Our bodies have many other circadian rhythms, such as temperature regulation and bowel regulation.

Other rhythms Infradian rhythms are rhythms that last more than 24 hours, such as the menstrual cycle or seasonal affective disorder Ultradian rhythms are ones that last less than 24 hours, such as sleep itself, the release of hormones and heart rate

Pacemakers and zeitgebers Endogenous pacemakers are a biological factor inside you (like a biological clock) that sets your rhythm Exogenous zeitgebers are things that are outside of your body, so external to you, that set your rhythm

How long is the average menstrual cycle What counts as day 1 of a menstrual cycle? On average, what day does ovulation occur? What is the endogenous control of the menstrual cycle through?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_rfZ_qj 1z4&feature=related https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_rfZ_qj 1z4&feature=related For each hormone write down what its role is. What other factors could effect the menstrual cycle?

What do you know about sleep itself and how sleep is studied? ( There are different types of sleep. An initial way that sleep was distinguished was REM and N-REM sleep. http://healthysleep.med.harvard.edu/healthy /science/what/sleep-patterns-rem-nrem http://healthysleep.med.harvard.edu/healthy /science/what/sleep-patterns-rem-nrem

There are different stages of sleep that cycle around the night (stage 1-5) http://healthysleep.med.harvard.edu/healthy/sci ence/what/sleep-patterns-rem-nrem http://healthysleep.med.harvard.edu/healthy/sci ence/what/sleep-patterns-rem-nrem Ultradian rhythm refers to the cycle of sleep NOT the details of what is occurring in each stage of sleep.

Question time How long do circadian, infradian and ultradian rhythms last? What hormone is responsible for drowsiness? Give an example of an endogenous pacemaker Give an example of an exogenous zeitgeber Where in the brain is the SCN found? Other than sleep wake cycle- identify another circadian rhythm What is significant about REM in the ultradian rhythm? What is LH responsible for? What causes women’s menstrual cycles to synchronise?
