Catholic (universal)‏ Universal in Time Prefigured in Creation and in Israel. Made to last forever as a New Creation. Universal in Space The Church is worldwide.”Baptize all nations…” Mt 28:19

World-Wide to conceive of the universal Church as the simple sum, or... the more or less anomolous federation of essentially different particular churches. In the mind of the Lord the Church is universal by vocation and mission, but when she puts down her roots in a variety of cultural, social, and human terrains, she takes on different external expressions and appearances in each part of the world.""The Church is catholic: she proclaims the fulness of the faith. She bears in herself and administers the totality of the means of salvation. She is sent out to all peoples. She speaks to all men. She encompasses all times. She is "missionary by her very nature". --Catechism of the Catholic Church 6/11/2016 "Go therefore an make disciples of all the nations" (Matthew 28:19).

What is a Rite? A Rite represents an ecclesiastical, or church, tradition about how the sacraments are to be celebrated. When the apostles brought the Gospel to the major cultural centers of their day the essential elements of religious practice were inculturated into those cultures. Diversity in the words and actions taken in Sacraments. In this way the Church becomes all things to all men that some might be saved (1 Cor. 9:22). 6/11/2016

Major Rites There are three major groupings of Rites based on this initial transmission of the faith, 1. the Roman 2. the Antiochian (Syria) 3. the Alexandrian (Egypt). (Later on the Byzantine derived as a major Rite from the Antiochian, under the influence of St. Basil and St. John Chrysostom. From these four derive the over 20 liturgical Rites present in the Church today.) 6/11/2016

What’s a ‘particular church’? A Church is an assembly of the faithful, hierarchically ordered, both in the entire world – the Catholic Church, or in a certain territory – a particular Church. Thus the Church of Christ is fully present sacramentally (by way of a sign) wherever there is a sign of Christ the Head, a bishop and those who assist him, and a sign of Christ's Body, Christian faithful. Each diocese is therefore a particular Church. 6/11/2016

Eastern Catholic Churches The Eastern Catholic Churches have their own hierarchy, system of governance (synods) and general law, the Code of Canons for the Eastern Churches. Variety of Rites. Allegiance to pope in Rome: The Supreme Pontiff exercises his primacy over them through the Congregation for the Eastern Churches. 6/11/2016

Apostolic Origin and Succession Chain of Apostolic succession linking Peter and Apostles to today’s pope and bishops Through the laying on of hands authority and priesthood passed on to next generation. Holy Orders. Persecuted. 11/12. Teachings Same as Apostles, Magisterium, councils Apostolic Tradition: source of Tradition/scripture

6/11/2016 Organization/Structure Bishop of Rome/Pope Hundreds of Bishops through out the world Each bishop is in charge of a diocese A diocese is a geographic territory like a county Within each diocese are several churches/parishes Each diocese is made up of many families/domestic churches Each parish has a Pastor in charge/priest
