How do people use Resources 5.7 C identify alternative energy resources such as wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal, and biofuels.

Lesson Vocabulary Renewable Resource- a resource that can be replaced in a reasonable amount of time Nonrenewable Resource- a resource that once used cannot be replaced in a reasonable amount of time

More Lesson Vocabulary Geothermal-a type of energy produced naturally below the Earth’s surface Biofuel-a fuel produced from biological materials such as wood

Lesson Vocabulary Continued… Hydroelectric- energy produced by using the mechanical energy of moving water Pollution- a waste product that harms living things and damages the environment Natural Resource- anything from nature that people can use

Natural Resources Water, wind, sunshine, soil, and coal. These may not seem to have much in common, however they are ALL natural resources. Human beings depend on natural resources all the time, you use many of them without even thinking.

Natural Resources Continued… Scientist classify resources into two groups (Renewable and Nonrenewable) Renewable resources are resources that nature can replace when used. Nonrenewable resources are resources that nature cannot replace after they are used.

Resources on the Move Where do natural resources come from? Some occur where you live, and others occur in other parts of the world and are transported long distances to get here. Ex: The US used more oil than it produces, so it must import oil or bring it in from other countries.

Resources on the Move Continued…

Alternative Energy As our fossil fuel supply decreases we will need to use more alternative energy sources. Each source has advantages and disadvantages. Some are only suited for certain areas.

Alternative Energy Continued…

What’s That Smell Pollution is the contamination of air, water or soil by materials that are harmful to living things. Air pollution comes from the burning of fossil fuels. Water pollution can occur when trash, eroded soil or chemicals from manufacturing, farming, and landfills get into lakes, rivers or oceans.

Using Resources at Home People do not use most natural resources in their original form. Plastic can be made from oil, paper comes from trees etc.

Notes Quiz Time Answer each question on the notecard.

Question #1-4 (Write the letter that best fits the description)

Question #5 (Write the letter of the resource below that is renewable)
