3. Using the three forms of heat transfer, explain how the atmosphere is heated. The Sun’s heat travels through space in the form of radiation. The Earth then absorbs the heat and through conduction, the air close to the Earth’s surface heats up. This warmer air then becomes less dense and rises while the colder, denser air above sinks and is then heated through conduction at the Earth’s surface. This process, called convection, continues to cycle over and over.
