Review Weather Test

Conduction, Convection, Radiation What are the three forms of heat transfer?

Using the three forms of heat transfer, explain how the atmosphere is heated. The Sun’s heat travels through space in the form of radiation. The Earth then absorbs the heat and through conduction, the air close to the Earth’s surface heats up. This warmer air then becomes less dense and rises while the colder, denser air above sinks and is then heated through conduction at the Earth’s surface. This process, called convection, continues to cycle over and over.

Westerlies Most of the United States is in what prevailing wind belt?

Temperature and Moistur e. What are the two characteristics that determine the type of air mass?

Wind occurs because air tends to move from regions of high to low pressure Wind occurs because air tends to move from regions of ___________ to ____________ pressure

It will be cold and wet. Describe a Maritime Polar air mass

The weather would be drizzly with little temperature changes. Describe the weather associated with a stationary front

The air mass responsible for Oregon’s weather is primarily a mP (wet and cold) due to it’s latitude and location near the ocean. Central Australia has a cT (dry and warm) due to it’s latitude and distance from the ocean. Using what you know about air masses, explain why the weather in Central Australia would be different than the weather in Oregon.

Global winds travel large distances and blow in one direction. Local winds travel short distances and can blow any direction, based on geography. What are the differences between local and global winds?

During the day, land heats up quicker then water, causing the air to travel from the cooler water to the land (Sea Breeze). At night, the land cools dramatically, making the water temperature warmer in comparison. This then causes the wind to blow from the land to the water (Land Breeze) Describe the wind patterns at the coast. Include why the wind changes direction in the evening versus the day.
