1 WARM-UP WEDNESDAY 10/7 As a poor starving peasant you finally did it!!! You took over government and help organize a representative government where you can address the issues of the poor. The rich First Estate (clergy) and Second Estate (Nobility) are fearful of their lives as they hide in the closet wondering if the poor will reap their revenge against them……..The country is now yours!!! The only problem is the old problems in France still exist. ( Food shortages, national debt, bad weather, high bread prices) What do you do now? What is to become of the King? What type of government will you seek? Do you follow the Enlightened intellects or succumb to the violence of the mobs?

3 Lets Review  The King becomes increasingly distrustful of his army and guards and hires _________________ from ___________. Rumors fly among the peasants that this foreign army was sent to _________________ revolutionaries.  The peasants soon arm themselves with guns and storm the infamous __________________ prison. This became the symbolic act to the French people. Rumors then began to spread to the French countryside that the nobles were hiring outlaws to ___________________ the peasants.  Panic overcame the poor called the Great _________________. The peasants then attacked the nobles and broke into the noble’s houses and ______________ them to the ground. 6,000 ________________ also stormed the palace. They demanded that the King and Queen be forced to leave their __________ and go to Paris.

5 THE GREAT SCARE CONTINUES Bands of angry peasants continue to attack the richer classes. The nobility and clergy are extremely frightened and ask to be part of the Third Estate’s National Assembly, declaring their love for “love of liberty and equality” Sweeps away the old feudal First and Second Estate’s privileges. Makes peasants equal to the nobles and clergy.

6  Are you quick to be willing to forgive and forget?  Work with a partner and come up with three 1) Reasons you would want to forgive the nobility and clergy and allow them to be part of your new government change 2) Reasons you feel it is time to punish the rich for the oppression or wrong-doings against the peasant class. Can you trust the intentions for the rich class?

7  The Rights of Man  The National Assembly adopt a statement of revolutionary ideals known as Declaration of the Rights of Man.  Influenced by Enlightenment ideas and The Declaration of Independence.  “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” becomes slogan for revolution  Cheesy Song Cheesy Song

8 TRANSLATE DECLARATION OF THE RIGHTS OF MAN  One half of the class will read and interpret portions of The Declarations of Man and the other half will go over The Declarations of Women……  Each representative will write each article on the poster  Compare and contrast using Venn Diagram

9 THE NEW CONSTITUTION NEVER GRANTED EQUALITY TO WOMEN IN FRANCE. WHY NOT? SHOULD THEY HAVE? DID THE WOMEN CONTRIBUTE TO THE REVOLUTION?  Warm Up- Friday Oct. 16th

10  Excludes women  People often were accused of being enemies of the revolution and lost their heads with no trial or justice.  No separation of church and state………..The Assembly took over church lands and declared that church officials be elected by property owners and paid as state officials.  Sell land to pay off the church lands to pay off France’s debt. NEW CONSTITUTION IN FRANCE

11 CONFLICTING GOALS CAUSE DIVISION Many peasants are loyal conservative Catholics and want to see separation of church and state. National Assembly argued over Constitution. Limited power of Monarchy making him only powerful to enforce laws made by Assembly. Many others wanted no King at all. Radical leaders began to turn against each other based on how to handle the same issues such as government debt and food shortages.

12  New extreme groups  Emigres- Nobles and others who had left France during the peasant uprisings who were on the extreme right. The wanted to undo the Revolution and restore the Old Regime. Upheld the idea of limited monarchy. Wanted few changes.  Sans-Culottes- Wage earners and small shopkeepers who wanted a greater voice in government.  Radical groups wanted to spread their ideas to all parts of Europe.

13  War with Austria  Austria and Prussia demand the King be put back on the throne.  France declares war against both countries.  20,000 men invade Louis’s palace in Paris and kill Swiss mercenaries.  Put royal family in prison

14  Radical groups murder nobles, clergymen, and loyalist prisoners in their cells.  Mobs control the power!  Group call The Jacobins want to remove the King and declare France a republic. Tried the King and found him guilty of treason. He was executed by the guillotine (The preferred way of execution in France)guillotine  Death of a King Death of a King  The Jacobins added a draft, demanding over 300,000 French citizens join the army to fight against Prussia and Austria. …….. Includes women.

15 CREATE A WANTED POSTER FOR THE EXECUTION OF KING LOUIS. --- WHAT CRIMES HE’S WANTED FOR --- EXPLAIN WHY HE NEEDS TO BE EXECUTED --- HOW HE WILL BE EXECUTED --- WHAT GROUP DO YOU BELONG TO
