3 Challenges to self-concepts in adolescence Undefined status between child and adult  neither dependent nor fully independent responsibilities may vary depending on social class Increased decision making & responsibility  pressure Length of “Adolescence” varies by culture Transitional adulthood – our culture has lengthened traditional adolescence due to the widespread social expectation that young people will attend college (  dependency)

18 Adult Socialization Anticipatory socialization –voluntarily preparing to accept new norms and values Career changes – becoming a stay at home parent or going back to work after being one, training for a job in a totally new field Decision to live differently (example – go Vegan or marry or divorce etc) Involves looking to a reference group as a model of appropriate norms and behaviors
