2 What to Expect Today Half day group orientation to Wayne College Campus tour to the Library, Smucker Learning Center, and Barnes and Noble Bookstore Group session for “hot topics” for new students & parents / family members Online academic advising technology session Individual advising with an Academic Adviser – schedule classes for next semester

3 Orientation for Parents… Focus on hot topics for family members of college students. Students will meet up with parents at the end of New Student Orientation

4 What is FERPA? Federal law protecting student privacy Student’s financial, academic and personal records cannot be shared with ANYONE without written student consent. Students must sign off to allow parents access to their information – Forms available in the Student Services Office – This needs to be an issue between the student and parent / spouse / guardian

6 What does the Wayne College Advising Office Do? Orientation Programs for new students Academic support first semester Academic Advising: – Class selection – Registration – Degree requirements Answer questions about policies, procedures, and class offerings.

10 Courses at Wayne lead to these Baccalaureate Programs College of Arts and Sciences: Humanities division, Natural Sciences division, Social Sciences division, Fine Arts division College of Business Administration: Accounting, Advertising, Finance, Management, International Business and Marketing College of Education: Early Childhood Education, Middle Level, High School, Intervention Specialist College of Engineering: Aerospace, Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Corrosion, Electrical, Mechanical, Mechanical Polymer College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST): Computer Information Systems, Criminal Justice, Engineering Tech, etc. College of Health Professions: Nursing, Social Work, Nutrition, Audiology, Exercise Science, Respiratory Care, Radiology, Surgical Tech PLEASE NOTE - Different degrees have different GPA and class completion requirements to be accepted into the upper level college. Additionally, some degrees are “competitive”.

12 Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Majors Start on the Akron campus for these majors: – Art, Music, Theatre, Athletic Training, Interior Design Summit College Associate Degrees: – Many majors (i.e. Criminal Justice, Paralegal, Engineering Tech, EMT and Hospitality Management) – Can take some courses at Wayne Additional courses to be offered in the future Ask your adviser any specific questions concerning your major

13 What is a Full-Time Student? Carry a minimum of 12-16 credit hours per semester (4-5 classes) Take at least 16 credits per semester to graduate with an Associate Degree in 2 years or a Bachelor Degree in 4 years Because students are also working, typical time to complete a degree is usually longer

14 What is a Part-Time Student? Under 12 credits per semester Financial aid requires enrollment of at least 6 credits Insurance (health and car) may require full- time enrollment. Please check with your insurance company.

15 Expectations Your adviser will want to know if you need: – day or evening classes – certain days of the week, etc. Homework – For 12-16 credits (full-time) expect to spend at least 24-32 hours a week studying. Work – class + study time leaves 10-16 hours a week for a job (60 hour principle)

19 Having Academic Difficulties? Students may struggle academically in at least one class. What can you do? 1. Meet with instructor ASAP! 2. Smucker Learning Center for tutoring support 3. Meet with Academic Adviser to discuss scheduling / drop class options

20 Differences Between High School and College Responsibility of learning shifts from teacher to student College courses are more difficult – more application of learning College is taught in a shorter amount of time In college, most of the learning occurs outside the classroom Students are responsible for requesting help or support Take control of your future
