By 2020  40% of all jobs will require graduate qualification  5M fewer low skilled jobs in UK  India has more gifted and talented learners than UK has learners Career adaptability  Our young people will have 10-14 jobs by age 38  Preparing for jobs which don’t exist 75% of schools not implementing impartial careers advice effectively  Concerns from CBI, Ofsted and Commons Education Select Committee Advice from other sources  Parents, friends – reliable but narrow  Media, internet – unreliable but broad 6

Careers Education Lack of career knowledge and qualification routes  46% of 17-18 year olds interested in 3 out of 25 occupational areas  Top ten jobs today did not exist 10 years ago Links to NEET  Uncertain at age 16 - 3 times more likely to be NEET Role of Employers  Active engagement – lower youth unemployment e.g. Germany 7

8. Whats happened so far….. ‘ Realising Potential Together’ Workshop held in October 2012 Wide range of attendees: training and education organisations, voluntary sector organisations, public sector orgs

9. Outcomes  Mapping of services for young people carried out, shared and published online  New networks made  Barriers to youth employment explored  Gaps in services explored  Agreed to seek support from business sector

Key findings  It was clear that attendees were not aware of the range of services that are being provided by different organisations  Need to encourage and support young people with entrepreneurial skills  Need to recognise the value of volunteering by young people  Need to inform parents & carers of school age children about career choices  Challenge businesses and support businesses to step up and provide opportunities  Need greater access to work experience, apprenticeships, career advice  We should recognise those businesses that do provide opportunities and help young people

11. Bournemouth Young Volunteers  Bournemouth CVS, Bournemouth 2026 Trust & Bournemouth Integrated Youth Service working together  Bournemouth Young Volunteers launched this year  Young people register their volunteering hours  Recognised with certificates  Helps them to stand out from the crowd  The first awards event being held in 2014  Seeking sponsorship for awards event

12. Young People Your Business  Event held at J.P. Morgan in September  Well attended and good feedback  Over 100 commitments made  Helped connect schools with businesses  Invites through local Chambers  Support being offered to businesses to met commitments
