2. Collar Colors and What They Mean In this shelter we use a color system to help our staff and volunteers avoid aggression problems. Red: Dog aggressive in the shelter. Yellow: Not yet evaluated. Green: Good with other dogs Only walk alone. Red Collar Ok to walk with others Green Collar Only walk alone. Yellow Collar

3. Sign In When you arrive at the shelter, you must sign in on the volunteer sheet located at the front desk. Sign in! Don’t lose your hours!

4. Leash Room Pick a walkable dog. Initial next to the name. Get the leash and harness. Fill up your pocket with treats. Sign off on list. Leash and harness. Pick a dog Put some in your pocket. Share some with dogs you pass. Pick your treats

5. Go Get Your Dog Enter the run calmly Take your time Allow the dog to sniff you Give the dog a treat before putting on the harness Give the dog a treat after putting the harness on. Robin is showing us how comfortable the harnesses really are.

6. Single versus Community Parks Single Parks Only to be used for Red and Yellow collar dogs. Dogs who have shown aggression towards other dogs should never be given the chance to interact with others by volunteers. They will be given plenty of chances to interact with others under the supervision of out trainers. Community Parks Should be used for co-housed dogs. Should be used for Green collar dogs Your attention should always be on your dog. If you notice a dog becoming stressed remove it immediately.

7. Emergencies Volunteers are required to carry their cell phone or a 2 way radio when walking dogs. Any fight or injury should be reported as soon as it happens. We always have a vet tech on staff during business hours. The emergency vet will be used after hours. Always stay alert Watch where your dog is going. Never break up a fight. Keep Red Collar dogs away from others.

9. Welcome Back When returning the dog to the kennel: Remove the harness and leash. Give the dog a treat. Fill out the evaluation sheet and leave it in the pocket on the kennel door for others to read. Note any concerns on the “Concerns” board on the outside of the leash room door.

10. Evaluation Once you have returned you dog to the run, fill out an evaluation sheet and leave it in the pocket on the run door. Tell us anything and everything you noticed.
