1 Autumn Term EYFS Parents Meeting Thursday 24 th September 2015

2 Outline of the meeting  A brief overview of the Early Years framework  Inform you about the day the class to day running of Reception  Inform you about phonics, reading and maths within school  Clear picture of homework  Attendance and medication  How you can support your child with their learning

3 Early Years Foundation Stage  Lays the Foundations for children’s journey and sets them up as life long learners  Characteristics of Effective Learning  Phonics  Reading  Speaking and Listening  Physical Development  EYFS/ Reception

4 Baseline Assessment  Currently completing baseline assessments  Yes or no questions but informed by careful observations  Completed by 16 th October where results are sent away to be analysed  Baseline data back by November.

5 Day to day running  Attention and listening developing  Access to daily phonics sessions  Daily Maths Makes Sense sessions  ‘Getting Busy’ time- learning through play  Continuous provision and enhanced provision and objective led planning  Reflection of learning  Fruit, milk and water access  Assembly, playtimes and rewards

6 Characteristics of Effective Learning  The characteristics are as follows:  Play and exploring  Finding out and exploring  Using what they know in their play  Being willing to have a go  Active Learning  Being involved and concentrating  Keeping on trying  Enjoying achieving what they set out to do  Creating and critically thinking  Having their own ideas  Using what they already know to learn new things  Choosing ways to do things and finding new ways

7 Observations  During continuous and enhanced provision  After objective led planning  Through enrichment and SMSC experiences  Use tablet to take a range of evidence  Match against Development Matters standards  Observe and record Characteristics of effective learning  Moderated in house and externally  You will be able to log on a see and make ‘keep sake’ comments

8 Phonics  Read, write, inc programme  Each sound is introduced- ensuring correct pronunciation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5J2Ddf_0Om8&fea ture=player_detailpage  Children learn ditties to match the sound  Fred talk to segment and blend  Further into the programme Fred Fingers for spelling  Green words and red will be stuck into their reading records.  They need to read these by sight: so recognise them with out segmenting and blending  The more practice they have the better- practice make permanence!

9 Reading  Individual reading currently  Will build up to guided reading (group reading with a teacher)  Reading at home incredibly important  Log in reading record.  Books will be changed as regularly as possible. It is encouraged that children look at their books on more than one occasion  They will also bring a library book home to share with your family.  Please encourage them to look after the books and really enjoy them.

10 Maths Makes Sense  Maths Makes Sense is a consistent, whole- school approach to teaching maths, with high expectations for all  Deep conceptual understanding through a learning system of concrete objects, actions and vocabulary which develops fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills.  Effective, fun and practical way of learning important foundations to mathematics  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpEzDEvV h84 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpEzDEvV h84

11 Homework  Children will now begin to receive a homework book every Thursday  It is to be handed in by the children on a Tuesday  Our homework is child led  They will choose a literacy activity from the list one week and a numeracy the next  They can complete one of their own ideas- perhaps in response to a family day out etc.  Try to be creative and make it fun  Occasionally some homework will be set- there will be a sticker in their book  Homework hero.

12 Purple Mash  Log in at the back of their reading record  Time on Purple Mash counts as homework  Please write in homework books activities complete  A range of activities many of which will link with out topics

13 WOW cards  Please complete these when your child has doe something to be celebrated at home  It can be school/ learning related, something in a club like swimming lessons or anything in which you and your child are proud of such as staying over night at grandparents for the first time.  These give us insight into what they can do or their interests to develop in our planning.

14 Punctuality and Attendance  Attendance is a high priority for the school this year.  Children should aim to achieve 97%attendance at least throughout the year  For 100% attendance within the week the children will be rewarded with a non-uniform day  Remember school’s doors open at 8.50 and registration is at 9am. If it after this time the children will need to enter through the main entrance and you sign them in.  Please remember holidays are not permitted during term time as it can have a negative impact on their learning.

15 Medication  Only prescribed medication can be administered by school staff  Throat lozenges and cough sweets are not permitted as they have a limited dosage  A medical form must be completed before the medication can be administered  Inhalers are kept in the a basket at close hand but we also need the box with the dosage allowance/ or a doctors note.  Please remember that this is for the safety of children.

16 Rewarding the Children  Homework hero  Golden Time  100% attendance non-uniform days  Lunchtime Award trips to the park  End of term team awards  Stickers, team points and raffle tickets  Head teachers award  Star of the day

18 AOB  It would be great if the children could have wellies and a waterproof coat in school at all times.
