Sweden Located in Scandinavia, Northern Europe Third largest country in Europe Has borders with Norway & Finland and is also connected to Denmark by the Oresund Bridge Currency is the Krona Capital city is Stockholm Has a royal family- King Carl XVI Gustaf Part of the EU Official language is Swedish although (luckily!) most Swede’s speak fluent English

Skåne I flew into Copenhagen Stayed with the Hemmingstäm family in their summer cabin in Åhus Åhus is located in the southern county of Skåne Skåne is very flat and fertile growing more than 25% of Sweden’s cereal crops and virtually all its sugar beet Åhus is famous as being the place where Absolut Vodka is made Here I celebrated Swedish Mid- Summer

6. Largest agricultural show in Sweden 2 days 20,000 visitors 350 trade stands

Stättereds 4H Gård Farm run by 4H members Open to the public Hosts school groups etc 40 4H farms across Sweden All have native Swedish breeds of livestock Run by volunteers to teach children about farming and animal care Here I met the other international exchangee’s; Eliza from the US Martin from Switzerland Ago from Taiwan

8. Gotland Stayed with the Kåring family Live next door to the family farm where they keep Gotland sheep, Charolais cattle and trotting horses Spent 10 days here Visited the historic city of Visby, the island of Fårö, a feed mill, a local beer festival & several farms Learnt how to play Varpa a traditional Gotland sport Gotland is famous for its many Medieval churches and Gotland sheep Very popular tourist destination Sweden’s largest island

Rix 2014 Stora Sjöfallet Annual 4H Camp Week long camp full of activities and competitions Moves around the country This year based at Stora Sjöfallet National Park 20km north of the Arctic Circle- Land of the Midnight Sun! 300+ 14-30yr olds I was on the Internationals team who finished 8 th out of 13 teams!

14. Stockholm I stayed in Stockholm for 1 night before flying back for my brothers wedding I stayed with Cecilia who had travelled to the US last yr as an exchangee

Swedish Agriculture Only 7.7% of the land is farmed The rest is forest (56%), mountains, marsh and lakes Swedish agriculture is worth 47 billion SEK (£4.7billion) The growing season in the south is 100days longer than the far north! Swedish farmers are very specialised and make good use of technology

Dairy Farming 369,000 dairy cows, (UK 1.8m) mainly Holsteins some Swedish Reds Average yield 8000+ litres (UK 7500L) Around 20% of herds are milked by robot ALL cows must go outside for part of the day for the summer months Milk price is very similar to the UK- mainly Arla Feed prices are similar although GM feed is banned
