 WIDA MODEL: Grades 1-12 Measure of Developing English Language

MODEL  Determines a student’s English language proficiency as described by WIDA ELP standards  Contains language and content appropriate for grade and proficiency level  Assesses a student’s abilities in the domains of speaking, listening, reading, and writing  Scores correlate to WIDA’s ELP levels

Goals  To serve as formative assessment to inform instructional planning  To provide guidance about the type of instructional services and level of support needed for ELs  To offer additional data to assist with appropriate ACCESS tier placement  To provide a measure of student growth for teacher SLOs

Administration  Will be piloted in schools in 2014-2015  Materials:  Fall: Student Response Booklets with Writing Task 1  Spring: Student Response Booklets with Writing Task 2  First semester students in a grade band are tested with the previous grade band test (Ex. 6 th graders will take the 3-5 test in December)  Decide in advance if you are administering the full MODEL test or the abbreviated Screener version highlighted in orange in the script

Materials  Test Administration Manual  Test Administrator Script  Speaking & Listening Student Test Booklet  Reading Student Test Booklet  Consumables  Student Response Booklet: 2 forms  Online MODEL Score Calculator Form will be used in place of the Summary Score Sheet

Testing Guidelines  Required sequence is Speaking, Listening, Writing, Reading  May administer in 1 session or 2 sessions ≤ 48 hours apart  Speaking & Listening  Must be in the same session  Must be given individually to all students  Writing & Reading  Must be in the same session  May be given in a group of ≤ 5 students

Approximate Timing Test SectionTime Allotted SpeakingUp to 15 minutes Listening (Steps 1 & 2)Up to 30 minutes Writing SectionPart A: 1 minute Part B: Up to 25 minutes Reading (Steps 1 & 2)Low: Up to 20 minutes Mid/High: Up to 25 minutes

Speaking  Use the WIDA Speaking Rubric to determine if a student response meets or approaches expectations  The teacher immediately records the score in the Student Response Booklet  Use a ? as a temporary placeholder if you are unsure of the scoring and move to next task  Items may be repeated or rephrased one time as listed in the script if requested by the student

Listening  Teacher reads the script with a natural rate of speech  Read items only 1 time  Repeat items once only if there is a severe disturbance (Ex. fire alarm or loudspeaker announcement)  The student points or says the letter of their answer choice  The teacher records the score in the Student Response Booklet

Listening  Listening Step 1 has 4 items that all students complete  Listening Step 1 is scored immediately  The number correct on Listening Step 1 & Speaking determines if the student will complete the Low, Mid, or High Listening Step 2  Step 2 consists of 9 or 12 items  Listening Step 2 is scored at the end of the entire test

Writing Part A  Approximately 1 minute  Open ended picture prompt  If the student produces English words, phrases, or simple sentences, go on to Part B  If not, move to Reading Step 1

Writing Part A  These samples contain only copied text or responses in a native language  The teacher should wind down the Writing section and continue with Reading Step 1  The teacher should continue with Writing Part B

Writing Part A  These samples contain single words and short phrases in English  Even with errors, the text is comprehensible

Writing  Part B  Approximately 20 minutes, 5 additional minutes can be given if needed  If the student is off-topic, you may redirect by repeating the prompt one time

Writing Quick Score  Part B is immediately given a Quick Score of Low, Mid, or High  Most students will score in the Mid range  The full Writing Score Sheet is used after the entire test for a more detailed score

Scoring the Writing Test  If the student completes Part B, that is scored first  Part A is scored only if  The student did not complete Part B  Part B is not-ratable  Part B score is < 3-

Writing Score Sheet  Has all 6 ELP levels and a Non-ratable score option  A condensed version of the writing rubric is located on the right side  Abbreviations are used for Performance Definitions  Lx- Linguistic Complexity  Vu-Vocabulary Usage  Lc-Language Control

Writing Scoring Sheet  Determine if the response meets the expectations of a level

Score Adjustments After determining the overall level of the response  Read the response again  Determine if there are strengths or weaknesses in one category (Lx, Vu, or Lc)  If the student’s writing is strong or weak in one feature, you may assign a + or – (Lc 2+)

Reading  The student records responses in the Student Response Booklet  Passages or questions may not be read aloud for students  Reading Step 1 has 4 items all students complete  The number correct on Reading Step 1 & Writing Quick Score determines if the student will complete the Low, Mid, or High Reading Step 2

Reading  Score Reading Step 2 after the entire test using the key in the manual  The placement and total number should be recorded in the box on the Student Response Booklet

After Testing  Verify all parts of the Student Response Booklet are complete  Tally the correct answers in Listening Step 2 & Reading Step 2  Evaluate student writing using the Writing Score Sheet  Use the score calculator at www.wida.us/modelcalculator and print out the form www.wida.us/modelcalculator  Secure all test materials WIDA MODEL™ Score Calculator District Student: School Date Administered State ID District ID Grade 6-8 Birth Date mm/dd/yyyy Classroom Teacher Test Administrator Home Language Version Administered MODEL Language Domain Scale Score Proficiency Level (Possible 100-600) (Possible 1.0-6.0) Speaking 317 2 Listening 344 2.9 Writing 397 4.6 Reading 347 2.6 Oral LanguageA 330 2.6 LiteracyB 372 3.8 Overall ScoreC359 3.4 A - Oral Language = 50% Listening + 50% Speaking B - Literacy = 50% Reading + 50% Writing C - Overall Score = 35% Reading + 35% Writing + 15% Listening + 15% Speaking Return to WIDA MODEL Score Calculator
