2
Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction Aims Learning Outcome 1 Understand the concept of sustainability as it applies to the construction and built environment sector http://www.edexcel.com/migrationdocume nts/BTEC%20Firsts%20from%202010/BF 021800-Firsts-Construction-Issue3.pdfhttp://www.edexcel.com/migrationdocume nts/BTEC%20Firsts%20from%202010/BF 021800-Firsts-Construction-Issue3.pdf

Objectives Recap the term sustainability To examine finite resources To consider the consequences of using finite resources Explain the relevance of sustainability (why it matters) to the construction and built environment sector (P2) To use the Google Chrome books and prepare your assignment submission
4
Introduction Development of the built environment is essential to meet the needs of people and communities. The construction and built environment sector must therefore consider how to strike a balance between these needs and the need to protect the natural environment. Considerations include climate change and global warming, finite resources such as oil and gas, and waste pollution management. We therefore must consider alternative approaches to construction methods and give urgent thought to new ways of providing energy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5NiT N0chj0#at=28https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5NiT N0chj0#at=28 Watch the video and note the four care instructions down….. 5
Care Instructions Reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and heavy metals Reduce our dependence on synthetic chemicals Reduce our destruction of nature Ensure we do not stop people meeting their needs Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
6
Relevance of sustainability What is meant by finite resources? Make a list of as many examples of finite resources you can Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
7
Finite resources The earth has precious finite resources, on its surface and underground including the main fossil fuels we use: oil natural gas Coal Most of our consumer energy relies on these resources to manufacture and provide energy for the goods and services our modern world demands. Fossil fuels are finite and will eventually run out, causing shortages and price rises as the resources dwindle. Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
8
Consequence Watch the video and make a list of all the factors. http://video.nationalgeographic.co.uk/video /environment/global-warming- environment/global-warming-101/ http://video.nationalgeographic.co.uk/video /environment/global-warming- environment/global-warming-101/ global warming melting ice-caps rising sea levels Climate change flooding shortages extinction of species Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
9
Global warming The earth is warming up. Here are some possible reasons that have been put forward: Burning fossil fuels releases CO² which traps heat within the atmosphere. The earth wobbles on its axis, causing North and South to receive more heat from the sun. Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
10
Melting ice-caps Ice in the glaciers and land based ice shelves of Greenland and the Antarctic are melting and receding. The water created flows into the sea, causing a rise in world sea levels. Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
11
Rising sea levels Sea levels are rising slowly. In the UK, it is predicted that the Thames Barrier will only protect London until 2070. Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction To control this, we spend millions of pounds on sea defences every year http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk- wales-north-east-wales- 21841204
12
Climate change /flooding Our climate is changing, within the last two years; the UK experienced two ‘once in hundred years’ flood, each resulting in huge damage to property. Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction http://www.bbc.co.uk/bl ogs/wales/posts/floods _and_storms
13
Extinction of species On August 28, 2007, the new Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) identified 1,149 species and 65 habitats in the UK that needed conservation and greater protection. The updated list included the: hedgehog house sparrow grass snake garden tiger moth Habitat protection otters bottlenose dolphins red squirrels habitat protection. As species become extinct, the natural order of nature will be upset Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
14
Local and global context If we include sustainability at a local level and in every part of our daily lives Then this will have a profound affect globally. Discuss and share how you embrace sustainability in your own life Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
15
What are countries doing? http://www.npr.org/2011/12/07/143302823/ what-countries-are-doing-to-tackle- climate-changehttp://www.npr.org/2011/12/07/143302823/ what-countries-are-doing-to-tackle- climate-change If we are to reduce the changes in global temperatures we must act together and every country must meet its agreed targets. Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
16
Impact on construction Buildings contribute over 80%, of total CO² emissions As far as construction projects go, sustainability needs to be carefully considered at every stage, from design – construction - use - demolition Those working in each sector need to plan together how to make projects as sustainable as possible throughout the buildings lifecycles. Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
17
Assignment (P2) Explain by describing the relevance of sustainability (why it matters) to the construction and built environment sector (P2) global warming melting ice-caps rising sea levels Climate change flooding shortages extinction of species Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
