Ergonomics is the science of designing a workplace to fit the worker Computer ergonomics is designing a good computer based work environment for the worker Good ergonomics tend to reduce strain, pain and fatigue
3
Computer ergonomics is important because sitting and working at a computer for prolonged periods of time can be harmful to your health Computer ergonomics work to reduce strain on the body when working on a computer
4
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Tendon Disorders Tendinitis Epicondylitis Tenosynovitis Stenosing tenosynovitis DeQuervain’s disease Ganglionic cysts Back, Neck, and Shoulder Problems Eye and Vision Problems Stress
5
Risk Factors Working with bent wrists A high rate of repetition using the hands A lack of rest for the hands and wrists
6
Solutions Keep your wrists and hands straight when typing Use a soft wrist support mat if needed Take breaks periodically
7
Risk Factors Intensive typing with wrists bent backwards Awkward posture with the arms and hands Repetition (with bent wrists as well) Tight gripping
8
Solutions Keep wrists straight when typing Take breaks periodically to reduce strain on tendons and wrists
9
Risk Factors Bad chairs that do not provide proper support for the entire back Tilting the head back constantly to see the monitor Improper placement of documents needed while working Bad posture while working at a computer
10
Solutions Use a desk chair with proper back and neck support Position the monitor so it is just below eye level Use a document stand to keep important documents at the same height and angle as the monitor
11
Risk Factors Unclear or small characters on screen Light reflections and glare on screen Light that is too bright Being too close or too far away from the screen Light directed at the screen causes glare
12
Solutions Make sure light in the room is above yourself and the computer as to not cause glare Sit in a position not too close but not too far from the screen; the screen should be about an arm-length away
13
Risk factors Improper lighting Equipment and furniture that are not the right shape or size Lack of breaks or non-keyboard work Repetitive tasks Furniture is not the right size
14
Solutions Working in proper environments with good lighting, etc. Take breaks from typing periodically Use proper sized furniture and equipment Do less repetitive tasks
