Something dead suddenly moving is frightening, the face in the fire conjures the idea of a demon, and the sounds make the house feel invaded...it is no longer safe. The shift of the mood from cheerful to creepy creates tension, a feeling that something bad will happen, and emphasizes the idea that the monkey paw is evil and dangerous. Part two Mood 1 prosaic Mood 2 mournful Herbert sarcastically jokes about the MP and the 200 LB his father wished for.
